I almost went to this a couple weeks ago but my car isn't doing too well and I didn't want to go out to Victorville alone cause I hear it's not the best area.

Yep and they are fantastic live. I saw them at Sasquatch and then earlier this month at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix. My roommate said they were the best band he saw at Glastonbury, he's a bit obsessed with them.

Love old country. This song = goodbye face.

Dwight Yoakam's cover on one of his early records is pretty good too.

Jim Reeves and Patsy are probably my two favorites from that era.

Patsy Cline was ridiculous. "Lovin In Vain" is an unthinkably good song.

EDIT: that second video is crazy good

There have been many country crossover artists throughout the years. Elvis of course but Roy Orbison is probably my fave.

I think it's a traditional folk song. Just not one that gets a lot of attention.

Can anyone recommend some Western Swing artists? I really like Big Sandy & the Fly-Rite Boys and I know about Bob Wills, but that's about it.
Also, is this a suitable thread to profess my love for rockabilly music?

My mom loves the staples, Tammy Wynette and such, and when I was a kid I loved Dolly Parton far more than is healthy. Country isn't something I seek out, because I think I kinda overdosed on it back then, but there are a couple of country and country-ish songs that are right up there in my "OMFGTHISSONG" category -

    - and I think I'd like to have more like them.

I saw Neko at a festival a few years ago, but the soundbleed from the next stage over was absolutely heartbreaking.

they actually "dropped the bass" during one of their songs at stagecoach. i didn't know you could do that with anything other than dance music.

God, I don't think so. The power went at home a while back though, so we had to listen to a Philomena Begley special on a battery powered radio.

Midlands Radio 3 is the worst thing on earth.

So, emboldened by the positive reception of this thread, I made this mix which is sort of like a personal chronology.

Not definitive, not authoritative, just personal. Not strictly genre-pure. And really, really long. (and I feel like I left out a lot).
