I have worked my entire life from the age of 16, had been at my last job for 10 years, but unfortunately the industry I was in took a hard hit. I was on unemployment for 3 months, got a job for 6 months and then got laid off again. My unemployment ran out May 31. Trust me, I was out looking, sending resumes to every company I could find hiring. I even agreed to work for $10/hour instead of the $24/hour I use to make and still had trouble finding a job. Luckily I finally found one but there are people out there who haven't. It really isn't that easy. The company I work for now placed an ad and received 900 resumes within 3 days before they pulled the ad. I have a pretty impressive resume with a good work history and it took quite a while to find a job.

And if you think I wanted to sit at home making $265/week you are all insane.

That might be you, but you're not the norm.

Here is what the typical low-wage person does when they get unemployment:

1) They realize that their unemployment benefits come relatively close to their after-tax take home at their previous job.

2) They realize that it is easy to collect unemployment without providing proof of looking for new employment.

3) They figure, "Why work, then?", and make just about zero attempt to get a job.

4) They supplement the income difference by taking little odd under-the-table jobs here and there, answering surveys, borrowing money, etc.

This is VERY COMMON, and it leads to people intentionally not working.

That's the problem with unemployment insurance. It makes sense for good, hardworking people who truly are on top of finding their next job, but it is so easily abused.

This is probably true but what is the other option? Take away the unemployment and more people have to go and collect welfare. I was on my way to the welfare office when I got the call about my job. I don't disagree that there are changes that should be made to the system but to take it away without warning is ridiculous. I have paid into unemployment for 20+ years. It should be based on what you paid in if you ask me.

Did you know that most states do not require any sort of proof of attempting to look for work in order to receive unemployment benefits? They just hand them out if you meet the initial requirements.

No, I said I would be willing to go to work for $10/hour, I didn't have a job for that. I have 2 kids, so my tax is minimal. If I make $10/hour my take home is more than $265. But luckily Ifound a job for more.

But the only way to collect unemployment is if you had a job that you got laid off from. If you quit or are reasonably fired then you can't collect. So obviously the people on unemployment at some point worked and paid money into the fund.
