    Default Sonar Chicago

Yet another brilliant festival being held in the beautiful city of Chicago

Chicago lands European electronic music fest
One of Europe's premier electronic music festivals plans to establish an American counterpart in Chicago starting this September.

The Barcelona-based Sonar festival for experimental and electronic music has announced that it will set up shop in Chicago Sept. 9 through 11 for the first of what it and the Department of Cultural Affairs hope will become an annual destination event. Planning is still in the preliminary phase, with acts and performance venues yet to be determined, but Cultural Affairs public programs coordinator Brian Keigher said the hope is to create a permanent public home for electronic music.

"There's really no proper electronic music festival in Chicago," said Keigher, who helped coordinate the house-oriented deejay series at Chicago's SummerDance festival in the mid-2000s. "(Sonar) is kind of the brand name of electronic music festivals in Europe. I'm not sure the first year out of the box it's going to be the big destination festival, but we're hoping so. We're now really just getting this moving and getting things locked in."

Sonar announced that it is working with the cultural affairs department, the Tennessee-based AC Entertainment (which co-produces the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival) and the Spanish Institut Ramon Llull in producing the Chicago festival. Sonar promoted single-day events in New York and Washington D.C. in May 2009.

"Sonar Chicago will present a multidisciplinary lineup with an experimental slant that is consistent with the distinguishing feature of the Barcelona festival, and which on this occasion will focus on emerging talent and local scenes, in both North America and Catalonia," Sonar's announcement reads.

As it is in Spain, the program will be split into Sonar by Day and Sonar by Night. Keigher said the Chicago Cultural Center will host the daytime programming, which will be free and include films, panels, performances and interactive exhibits. The nighttime events would be concerts at various theaters; Keigher named the Congress Theater, Metro and Millennium Park's Pritzker Pavilion as possibilities. Concert ticket prices also have yet to be determined, but Keigher said the goal is to keep them low.

Spain's three-day Sonar festival has been running in Barcelona since 1994. This year's event runs Thursday through Saturday with a lineup that includes LCD Soundsystem (who will be playing Chicago's Pitchfork Music Festival next month), Roxy Music, Air, The Chemical Brothers and Hot Chip (who will appear at Lollapalooza in August).

Keigher, who traveled to the Sonar festival in 2008, said "offers are out" to some acts to perform in Chicago. "We'll see if we can actually lock in some of these great groups," he said.

No doubt. EDM fans have to be encouraged by this. Sonar seems to go after quality progressive acts.

Oh fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucccccckkkkkkk. And it doesn't conflict with ATP, although getting work time off is going to be a bitch. Can't wait for a lineup. I fucking love Chicago.

This will definitely have a better lineup than North Coast with the Chems. Just look at that Barcelona lineup.

    brand name of electronic music?

not sure it will be a big destination festival first year?

    just now getting this moving?

chems playing in town a week earlier, not at this festival?

    not too reassuring.

oh by all means, sonar barcelona is great.

the press release does not give me much confidence that they can replicate it in Chicago, starting to plan so late in the year, and missing possibly the biggest electronic act touring this fall. also I dislike them calling sonar a brand name. really? how would you feel about someone starting coachellas on other continents?

still, let's hope they pull it off.

One act does not make a festival. The Chems will probably not be an option (this year)due to their contract with the other fest.

I don't why you're freaking out over the "brand name" thing and how that relates to the Fillmore. Coachella, Primavera, Roskilde and all of the great festivals in the world are brand names.

I don't think it's likely. He's playing Bestival in England sometime between the 9th through 13th of September.
