Would I be able to jump into Rectify in the second season without having seen the first?

I watched Fargo. Fucking fantastic. People really need to watch that on the streaming services if and when it appears.

Definitely not. Not only for plot reasons, but for character reasons as well. There's so much that happens in those first six episodes.

I've yet to see Lost, but I really enjoyed that pilot. I imagine the origin of both of the cultish groups will reveal itself over the next several episodes, and I'm going to guess that part of the key of understanding this series will just be accepting that there's no explanation (and probably will never be one) for the "rapture" event.

totally agree. that was similar to lost. it was impossible to get an explanation for everything and it's not like every explanation would have been acceptable anyway.

I think those are two different things. Idiots rushing on to Twitter to proclaim "oh my god, [spoiler] on Game of Thrones!" five minutes after the show airs on the east coasts adds nothing to anyone's critical understanding, and is probably a total dick move. On the other hand, the spoilerphobic culture is silly when it comes to discussing old seasons of The Wire, even if the immediate context isn't a review of The Wire. I mean, we don't do this for old movies, do we? But apart from that, what I really endorse in the essay is the idea that spoiler culture is ruining how we watch shows by prizing plot above everything else that's going on. So many people missed the higher pleasures of True Detective because they were too busy analyzing screen grabs and looking up information about the Yellow King on Wikipedia.

I'm sorry that me wanting to watch a thing without you giving away unnecessary information out of malice (as in this essay) or like a moralizing busybody (well you should have watched sooner!). I don't think he's ruined Breaking Bad for me (no, I didn't know) but he's taken a thing away from me.

The fact that Arthur Miller wanted me to know that Willy wasn't going to make it is not even comparable to the half billion critics trying to leech off of content they had nothing to do with deciding how I should see something the first time.

I would disagree that "anti-spoiler culture privileges the weight of plot and narrative above all else", instead saying that being spoiler-friendly acknowledges that plot and narrative are facets where approach is important. Many, many things are great to see (the first time) not knowing what the hell is going to happen and letting your imagination soar. That's a great fucking feeling, and every detail some assholes gives me about what happens deflates that a little.

And yes, it is absolutely an (old) spoiler that Wizard switches from black and white to color. That shit can have (and was designed to have) and impact. I am reminded of a not dissimilar effect in a Russian film where I gasped the first time I saw it.

But I think there are different standards for different types of reviews. Quick blurbs about movies, including release day Should You See It type reviews? These should be very spoiler free. Significant critical retrospectives and articles, especially later ones? I agree that you can't talk about a lot if you have to dance around certain things so it is reasonable to have a spoiler warning and go ahead (like his Hannibal review he links to; yes people were dumb for getting upset at the old/new image), as long as you're not spoiling for the sake of spoiling.

Incidentally Hannibal, though I have been watching it live is a show where I have found I have been happy to look for spoilery information beforehand. I mean, not reading recaps from leaked episodes but looking at the pictures and watching the videos from the tumblr and reading Fuller's tweets, etc. They went all out on social media, and sure, gave a decent amount away. But that fucking show is SO fucking crazy that there's always more. Or, very importantly, the fucking creators know what they can give away and make the show work.

Opera is the only other thing I can think of where I will read up as much as I can on a thing before seeing it because it is such a stylized art form, much more about raw emotion than plot.

My girlfriend gave me her login information for HBOGO & Amazon Prime. I almost didn't come to work today because there are so many new shows I want to catch up on. I am catching up on Girls, then I want to finish Six Feet Under & The Wire. I also want to start Deadwood, Oz, Leftovers and Game of Thrones. Are there any other old HBO series that are must sees? I have watched Sopranos, Dexter & Weeds (although I think the last two were Showtime?).

There is some major bullshit up in here.

    1) Not nominating Tatiana from Orphan Black is a HUGE oversight. Her performance is clearly deserving...I was sure she would be a shoo in. Christ, get out of Juliana Margulies' vagina, Emmys.
    2) In true Emmy fashion, Emmy recognizes the most overrated show of the year, True Detective, in a huge way. It was a good show. Not a great show. Without the acting performances, I don't think many would have given a shit.
    3) Having Matthew McConaughey up against Cranston is a tough one. That whole category is tough....Spacey deserves it too. I'm not a McConaughey fan, but his performance was very good. Hoping Cranston gets it...he deserves it for Ozymondias alone.
    4) Again on the True Detective note, it's really really stupid that the Emmys let HBO enter the show in whatever category they want. The show is, by their own definition, a miniseries. It should be included in the miniseries category.
    5) I don't get how OITNB is a comedy. There are some funny moments...but it's no comedy. I also don't get how Kate Mulgrew gets a supporting actress nomination but the other nominated actresses are in the guest star categories. They're all cast members...I don't get how they can get nominated in the guest star category All of the comedy categories are pretty weak. Nice to see Ricky G get a nod, but Derek is sort of a depressing show. I hope Louis CK gets it over that goddamn Jim Parsons again. JLD or Amy P probably deserve the actress win.
    6) I chuckled when I saw Ellyn Burstyn get nominated for Flowers in the Attic. Seriously, WTF?

Why is Louie nominated for comedy? This season was nothing that resembled a comedy.

Obligatory reminder that the douchebags who vote for this stuff gave it to Jeff Daniels for his festival of Sorkin mansplaining last year. Over Hamm, over Spacey, over Cranston.

Also, dumb that Christina Hendricks keeps getting nominated for stuff, even as Mad Men increasingly has nothing in particular for her to do.

Very good point. Also, Vincent Kartheiser (Pete from Mad Men) continually gets screwed.

    Another good point.

And it doesn't make sense how these shows get cataloged, especially the HBO ones. How are Treme, Fargo, American Horror Story are categorized as miniseries, but True Detective is in the Drama category. TD had 10 episodes while those other shows had 13, I'm pretty sure.

I wish Mads Mikklesen would be getting some due for Hannibal but that show is probably too gory for the Emmys. But then its really only one step gorier than Game of Thrones or American Horror Story (which is not that great of a show).

The Emmy's have reached their moment of necessary deconstruction.

maybe i have my seasons wrong, but i thought she played a big role in last season. wasn't that when she made those major sacrifices and told off don?

i still think louie counts as a comedy. i feel like the term comedy really just means not a drama.

and are we really taking awards shows seriously?
