I watched Sopranos for the first time last year and finished the entire series in a little less than two months. Fucking great, nothing comes too close really.

i don't have HBO but was happy to find that the first episode of Looking is available on youtube. Great setting (SF) and the characters are supposed to be non-cliché, which I'd normally be skeptical of, if it wasn't created by the director of "Weekend" (aka, one of the best gay indie films of the last 10 years). Hope people don't write it off as a gay-Girls.

HBO canceled "Hello Ladies" Apparently, the network will give the show a "wrap-up special" to provide some closure to the series.

Started watching "The Wonder Years" on Netflix, like I don't have enough TV commitments on my plate. Since they have no plans to put it out on DVD or blu-ray, looks like they didn't bother to master it at all beyond what they had on hand. Also, because of right's issues, a some of the music has been replaced, including Joe Cocker's version of "With A Little Help From My Friends," which throws me off every time I watch now.

I have seen other shows on Netflix that has changed the music some because of rights. I feel like if they can secure the rights to the show then they should be able to get the rights to the music used also. I mean if the show got the rights to the music, and then Netflix gets the rights to the show, the rights to the music should automatically go along with the show.

Wow, I know the music is why it's never had a home video release, but man, that is awful. No Joe Cocker, seriously?

This is a common problem with any show that came out prior to 2000, or right about the time that full seasons of tv shows were coming to DVD. The thought is that people didn't forsee a time where whole seasons of a TV show (any TV show) for purchase would be a popular thing, outside of say, Twilight Zone or Star Trek, so the deals for licensed music for shows only really extended to broadcast. When it came around to DVDs and recently with streaming, the deals for the music have to be renegotiated, and often times, would be too expensive for the home video release. For a good example of this, check out the Daria box set - The ENTIRE SHOW's soundtrack was licensed music (since MTV had the rights to drop in any music they saw fit), so all of the music had to be replaced, which they even note inside the dvd case (they state that the music rights were "prohibitively expensive" and was largely responsible for the extended wait getting it to dvd)

At least when they put out Freaks and Geeks, they were willing and able to secure the rights to all the music in that one.

Let's be serious though, if they actually tried to license all this, the DVDs would probably cost the same as your average space shuttle:

Yeah, was just watching the forth episode ("Angel") and the part where Kevin's sister was jaming out to Hendrix's "Foxy Lady" was replaced with such an odd sounding semi-sound-alike version, it took me a moment or two to figure out what they had replaced.

Tech issues aside, I am really liking re-visiting this series. It's nice to see a period series that's isn't overly relient on pop-culture gags. There's a lot I had forgotten about it. I had always remembered Kevin & Winnie's kiss from the pilot, but I had not remembered the circumstances (Winnie's brother being killed in Vietnam) that led to it. Also, as a kid, when his father is mentioned as being a Korean War vet, I believe that was the first time I had even heard of the Korean War (up to that point, I had still believed that MASH was about Vietnam).

I think it helps that a) F&G was a short-lived series, and b) a boutique label like Shout! Factory (who are awesome, btw) was footing the bill.

Good call on cancelling Hello, Ladies. Merchant is obviously a very funny writer and made a great sidekick to Gervais in Extras, but he's clearly not someone who can anchor an entire show. And that whole outsider-in-LA-LA-Land thing is so overdone anyway. Andy Richter learned his place in the universe... eventually. I'm sure Merchant will, too.

Yeah, this is supposedly the case with Ed, which I've been hoping for ages will show up on DVD. It's been in limbo for years.

Oddly enough, it's also been the case with the Dawson's Creek dvds, of all things.

(Don't ask how I know this, I don't even know myself, yet, there it is)

The first season of Rome was great, the next one mot so much. Didn't even care to watch the third if there even was one.
