    The Walkmen Announce New Album
Yesterday, we reported that Interpol's new album comes out September 14. As it turns out, September 14 will be a big day for bruised, world-weary New York indie rock, since that's also the date that Fat Possum will release Lisbon, the new album from the Walkmen.

The band recorded the follow-up to 2008's You & Me over two years, working in warehouses in Brooklyn and Philadelphia. They also wrote a few songs on trips to the Portuguese city that gave the album its title. St. Vincent/Mountain Goats/Thermals knob-twiddler John Congleton produced the 11-song album, and Passion Pit/Les Savy Fav veteran Chris Zane engineered it.

Back in February, we talked to frontman Hamilton Leithauser about the album. Leithauser told us that the band had taken inspiration from early Elvis and Sun Records tracks, but that the final product wouldn't sound much like that: "The instrumentation is very simple, and then there's a very loud vocal and a softish drum. There is a slapback guitar on everything."
my most anticipated album since You & Me was released in '08. today's news has just unleashed butterflies in my tummy, i'm bubbling over with nervous excitement.

I'm excited but remain reserved about any forthcoming work from The Walkmen... they're so amazing sometimes and other times disappoint me, so we'll see.

i'd mark AHMO as their weakest original LP, but it is also home to "All Hands and the Cook." in a live setting, it becomes a beast of a song, probably the highlight of many of their gigs i've attended.

This is exactly how I feel about this band. I hope the new one is good. I have not seen then live yet, hopefully soon.

"Stranded" is the first single from Lisbon. have a listen @ the NPR link below
    http://www.npr.org/blogs/allsongs/20...om-the-walkmen
    ...
"Early on we had a whole batch of songs that were based on this New-Orleans-style horn playing that (guitarist) Paul (Maroon) was working on," says frontman Hamilton Leithauser. "But 'Stranded' is the only one that actually ended up making the album. I think it was maybe the second song we wrote for Lisbon, so it sort of exemplifies our sound from maybe two years ago. I guess it sounds more like our last record, You & Me, than a lot of the other songs on Lisbon. The horn section included my wife, Anna, our lead trumpeter Paul Brandenberg, and a ratty assortment of the other guys we usually tour with, mostly trumpets, and maybe two trombones. We had them all into Gigantic studios, and I sang the whole thing live right there with them and the band. It's always fun doing a big production like that. Paul also added a bunch of his own trumpets down in Philly to give it that wobbly style, and maybe just to make sure it was completely out of tune. (keyboardist) Walt (Martin) and I did the words together.

"We took two trips to Lisbon over the course of writing this record. None of us had ever been there and we were really blown away by the place. The topography and architecture are stunningly handsome. Even when we were there for the rainy season — it literally never stopped raining — it was a trip that outshone a lot of others. We've never had much luck at all in Europe, and the Portuguese were surprisingly accommodating. I think those two trips really helped keep us motivated while making this record. We named the record Lisbon as sort of a 'thank you' and a small tribute."

swapped in a new link above for "Blue...". the slight fade in (it's the ad preceding the song) bugged me. funny how they're rolling out songs from the beginning half of their recording process.

    i'm infatuated w/ this verse:
Black is the color of your eyelash
Spanish is the language of your tongue
Life rolled us over like a town car
Bruised up and busted to the ground

another day, another new song makes the radio waves. in case you were counting, "Woe Is Me" is song #5. yep, we've been privy to almost half of Lisbon already.

recap of all five songs (HQ mp3s courtesy of onethirtybpm who got the go ahead from Fat Possum to stream 'em):
    "Stranded" (HQ mp3): http://onethirtybpm.com/wp-content/u...tranded-HQ.mp3
"Blue As your Blood" (HQ mp3): http://onethirtybpm.com/wp-content/u...r-Blood-HQ.mp3
    "Juveniles" (HQ mp3): http://onethirtybpm.com/wp-content/u...veniles-HQ.mp3
"Angela Surf City" (HQ mp3): http://onethirtybpm.com/wp-content/u...rf-City-HQ.mp3
"Woe Is Me" (radio rip from KEXP): http://www.mediafire.com/?dammmiktmznygmy

best production the boys have ever had. this album is shaping up to be even more stunning than You & Me.

agreed about the production. the songs so far have been solid, and 11-songs for the album is a good sign. i'm excited to see them in l.a. with japondriods. only other time i've seen them live was at coachella. it'll be nice to see a full set.

Ya know, I've seen The Walkmen 4 times without paying to see them on their own ever. Henry Fonda with Japandroids should be awesome. I'm gonna wait to hear the whole album, but I bet the songs so far are fantastic considering their prior track record. Love this band!

"All My Great Designs" sounds like a cut from EWPTLMIG. this is one of the two songs on Lisbon i've yet to hear a live version of.

i trust i'll be tethered to my headphones for the rest of today. gonna ignore my work e-mails for as long as i possibly can.
