I Just Don't Get the Hype

I had never even heard of NMH until I started coming to this board (actually, the old Coachella board) 6 years ago. I like the album, I think it is good and very worthy. It didn't change my life or anything, like it did with some people, but then again I wasn't 17 when I first heard it either.

I love so many of these albums.
I will be the first to admit that my tastes are generally abnormal and wide reaching.
I find the albums I don't "get" are either artistically derivative and/or straight forward like most mainstream albums, or they rely heavily on an ear for highly technical instrumentation.

I don't listen to hear "skills", I don't really care how it is made. I like my art to be about music not sportsmanship. Whatever it takes to create a mixture of sounds that will entertain me.

That being said Embryonic was the first Flaming Lips album to really amaze me, and Sgt. Pepper is my favorite Beatles album.

It makes perfect sense (to me) looking at my tastes. My #1/2 are The Downward Spiral and Orbus Terraum.

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is all about raw, visceral emotions. If you're not that into lyrics, I can easily see how you wouldn't appreciate it that much. But if you are at all into the lyrical aspects of songwriting, I can't imagine how you could not love that album unless you haven't paid enough attention to the lyrics.

Anyone who can listen to the song In the Aeroplane Over the Sea while reading the lyrics and not feel transcendental should check their pulse (or IQ).

I have loved Daft Punk since the first 30 seconds of Da Funk.

I don't think there is anything to "get". They either move you or not.
I still like Homework the best. I think Discovery was just so mindblowingly different and original that it will alway be the critical darling. I was actually unhappy it wasn't Homework 2.0 at first, but it grew on me. It does blow my mind how they basically became the biggest 90's "electronic" to stick around.

I heard In the Aeroplane... when it came out and was pretty bowled over by it almost immediately. I certainly hoped there would be more to follow, but the fact that nothing came but silence didn't have any bearing on what the album meant to me. It's one of those albums I can't help but yell along with at the top of my lungs when alone in a car. Lucky for my throat and fellow motorists, I no longer own a car. I'm not about to belt out "Oh Comely" on the subway.

NMH also made On Avery Island, Everything Is (EP), and Jeff did two single albums (one live). It's not like that's the ONLY thing they ever produced. Regardless, it's a stunning album that deserves all the recognition it gets.

I'll preface this by saying that I do like Daft Punk's music, but people really need to admit that the spectacle of their live performances is 90% responsible for their popularity, especially amongst the Coachella crowd. You take away the pyramid, the lights, and the robot costumes and half of that crowd splits for the parking lot in '06.

I think there are certain artists/albums that have to hit you at just the right time or age. Otherwise, you don't get it. I've loved Pavement since I was 16. Like, silly fangirl love. But I don't really get The Pixies. I don't dislike them...I just have no attachment. And I think it's because I didn't listen to them in my teens/early 20s.

It doesn't necessarily have to do with age. I listened to Joanna Newsom a few years ago and hated her. Didn't get it. Then I decided to give her another chance when I heard something I liked in "Peach, Plum, Pear" when I was listening to that Pitchfork 500 thing. Love her now. Obviously wasn't in the headspace to appreciate her when I first listened.

Well their live performance is responsible for their current ability to sustain popularity for sure. Discovery is already 9 years old, and Human After All wasn't exactly a mind blowing follow up.

I started listening to the Pixies at the age of 28. I was immediately transformed from a disco bunny to an alt bunny. Actually the transformation started with REM but it was the Pixies that sealed the deal.

I have been recently revisiting some of my older CD's and have been giving Roxy Music's Siren a lot of play. This is one album that I listened to as a young teen. Not sure I would have been so taken by it if I had picked it up today.

who the fuck cares about influences. just because someone you like likes something, doesn't mean you have to like it.

to each their own, to ME they just don't stand the test of time, aside from a few songs. and to ME, i can only understand the obsession if it's the type of music you grew up with. for example, i grew up listening to queen and the beatles and therefore will be happy listening to pretty much anything they did.
