I Just Don't Get the Hype

I lived through Bowie's 80's hits and still love "Let's Dance" like crazy. I was not around for anything earlier than that and have grown to love the older releases.

I keep on trying to list bands that fit, but for the most part they're all bands I haven't bothered listening to beyond a few singles or "classic" hits. That or I haven't listened to all of their releases (LCD Soundsystem), so I don't know if it's fair to say anything like that just yet.

Sort of. I don't think my appreciation of the Labyrinth soundtrack at 8 years old is directly related to my ability to really connect with his older, classic work, when i was in my late teens.

spoken by someone who understands Bowie: an exercise in imagination. (since drinky was a kid...that's when yr imagination runs wild...) if imagination is over-hyped, then what else do we have to dream about?

sidenote: (I should re-listen to Sea Change, i do love that album, so eerie and beautiful)

this is generally why i don't post in the music forum much, except to talk about shows. conversations about "hey, i like this" and "oh, well i don't" are extremely boring to me. i'm not one of those people who feels i need to convert everyone to what i like either.

and this thread is pretty constructive - it's inspired me to check out a lot of past albums and look at them with a fresh outlook. perhaps you need to quit easily dismissing threads as useless and try for once to get something out of the hours you spend on here.

I have no idea how that would be possible. Elton John did indeed do songs on the The Lion King soundtrack though (which actually is quite good for what it is), so i'm not sure what's happening in your brain.
