it took a really long time for me to get into The Monitor, but i loved it by the time Local Business came out, which i pretty much immediately dug. It helps that they are really incredible live, too.

I actually found Local Business easier to get into, mostly because the previous album was so long and dense, almost to point of being overwhelming. The new one feels much more immediate and focused, overall.

I got into Titus kind of late, but I love the Monitor. The Civil War concept really hooked me. Haven't gotten into Local Business as much.

I haven't noticed any posts about Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti. He has a couple ditties I enjoy and I get some humor from a few tunes which I always enjoy. Most specifically Schnitzel Boogie. I figure it's a lack of technical prowess appreciation because all I read about him is that he's a savant when it comes to organization but I can't get into Mature Themes or anything I've listened to yet.

I liked the Monitor and Local Business from the get go. The Monitor could be a little more difficult because of what Drinkey said IMO. I still can't get into Airing of Grievances too much. I mean I love Fear and Loathing and like a few of the other songs but as a whole not even close to these last two.

I've had trouble getting into the Replacements too, Chris.

The Airing of Grievances is more lo-fi and raw than the Monitor or Local Business. I could get why people don't like that one as much, but it was my intro to them and I saw them twice on that tour, so it holds a special place in my heart. Plus, quiet acoustic intro that gets blown open with a loud FUCK YOU: awesome.

You guys should listen to Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash by the Replacements. Let it Be is their best album, Tim is their most accessible, Pleased to Meet Me is the cleanest and most "pop" but Sorry Ma is the most fun, loud and brash.

Tim is the one i've tried a couple of times and I thought it was ok. I felt like it had a time and a place and I just missed it. I used to have friends that loved them back when they were still together. Heard so many stories about their last show when they broke up on stage in Grant Park.

I saw Westerberg on his solo tour for 14 Songs and I really liked that show. That had to be like 1994-1995. I'll try Sorry Ma then.

Okay, maybe it had a time and a place, but I was born in 1986 and didn't hear the Replacements until early 2000. That time and place was long gone, and they are one of those bands that truly connect with me.

And Stink, I really only think the Titus comparisons work with the first three 'Mats releases, at least so far. Once they went softer, weirder and more calm they had less of that suburban angst and rebellion. Sorry Ma is the one that makes me think the most of Titus.

To date, All Shook Down is the only Replacements album I have ever heard, for no real reason. I bought it on a whim probably around 200, knowing I should listen to them. i have liked it quite a lot for the last 12 years, but never got any other albums. i finally need to fix that.

I love that first song on Let It Be, and found out later that Peter Buck played guitar on that track. Some of the songs might be dated, and might not hold up, but damn if it ain't good.

It's really only in the last year or two I've begun to appreciate Let It Be. I think after absorbing all the snark and irony and caustic wit of Sonic Youth and Butthole Surfers and Minutemen and whatever, it was kind of hard to square up with the almost-but-not-quite schmaltzy sincerity behind the smirk of a song like Androgynous. But now that I'm a little bit older and little bit more sentimental and nostalgic, it's begun to really strike a chord with me. I'm still not one of the devout, but I get it now.

A lot of people seem to dislike him. Have you heard Before Today? I haven't heard everything he's done but that one is pretty accessible. He makes warped pop music that sounds like it was recorded on a cassette and then lost under a car seat for years getting covered with dust, soda stains, and food specks. He reminds me of early Beck at times.

Metz. I mean, I understand why people like them, and I haven't seen them live which I've heard is awesome, but the album is way too over-hyped. Nothing special and not nearly as "abrasive" as people claim. Plus, they've been getting compared to Drive Like Jehu? Not even near as good

I love love the Metz album, but yeah when I hear people use the words abrasive or jarring I don't really get that so much.

Abrasive is completely right given the field they're working with. In the context of a Sub Pop debut in the pathetically tame music field we're currently faced with, their debut is a blast of sandpaper to the system. As a whole it may not seem "abrasive" but it's unforgivingly loud and ugly, which is a great move from a young band in my book.

It's kinda like when your second or third cousin you haven't seen in a long time shows up to your party on an old Norton, and you don't dismiss him right away because at least it isn't a Harley. Then three hours later he is doing coke on the counter and trying to fuck some nasty chick off the side of the porch.
