I Just Don't Get the Hype

I don't really care. I listened to Pink Floyd when I was a teenager. I also have fond memories of DSOTM. It's one of the very first records I can remember hearing. My dad used to play it from time to time when I was a little guy. But I can accept that both PF and DSOTM are overrated. People like drugs.

An older friend of the family was trying to posit that no good (rock) albums have been made since 1980. He's 50 something. I think he's wrong. I cited Radiohead.

Is his 'theory' correct? or is he just an aging hipster?

The idea of rock music has slowly faded away since then, especially by this decade.

But obviously there have been hundreds of great English speaking music albums over the last 30 years.

Pink Floyd's DSOTMoon is perhaps more influential than anything, I can hear it's concept echoing today in the likes of Radiohead's OK Computer, and if you want I'd be happy to give more examples. Hype is fun to play with. Just look at Die Antwoord's Pink Floyd shorts. perfect symbolism of hype + making fun of it. Plus I like rainbows and that cover art has let its legacy endure ala Sgt Pepper... just my 2 cents.

Strokes were meh live in 2002 and I doubt theyve gotten better.

See em in a club and Im sure its ace, but I really doubt they have a big enough show for the fests they are playing. But Id love for them to prove me wrong.

Have never been able to get into this album. All through high school I had my friends telling me how fucking great Guns and Roses are and I just found it all kind of be bland... Personally I can't handle Axl's voice on any song. I have to give credit where credit is due though and say that Slash always kills any record he is on.

Daft Punk have a couple of really fucking good pop house songs. They also have a lot of terrible cheese. Homework has more of the former and Discovery has more of the latter. The good thing about their live show is they don't play most of their shitty, cheesy songs or else they mix them with better songs so they're not annoying any more. I think most of their hype comes from making it ok for rock kids to listen to house.

The only song I luv by Animal Collective is "My Girls" - that and I do love the seriousness/spiritual importance of sound that they more than acknowledge. Talented boys.

I'd say this is pretty accurate.

their hype comes from 1) their name (which they didn't come up with themselves, fine), 2) counterculture/rave status, 3) saviours of french (dance) music, 4) a few amazing anthems that shall remain in the past (my brain can't take another listen to anything they've done) 5) the track 'technologic' is pretty spiffy (lyrics wise) and like most things french, they are oldfashioned, outdated, and dining out on their looks. #thereisaidit

It's the time when it came out, most bands were play it safe Glam Rock and then this dirty, true rock album came out. Although GN'R were 'glam' in some ways, they were much grittier and it was a shocking record to the mainstream public.

Also, for best Gn'R, check out Use Your Illusion, namely II. That is a brilliant record that never gets talked about, usually overshadowed by Appetite. Which is good, but UYI has a lot of depth and some very, very well written songs.

i'm not a fan of bowie's vocals mr. mills. vocals are a huge thing for me. doesn't mean you have to be a great singer or even non-annoying (i love robert smith for crying out loud), but i have to like your style and i don't like his for whatever reason. i think he frightened me in labrynth. that movie would be so awesome with out his scary, glittery package.

and donald, i'm glad i'm not the only one who doesn't get LCD soundsystem. i don't hate them like randy, all my friends is good, but i don't get the obsession either.
