Oh fuck yes. I went last year and had a great time. Looks like this year will be no different. I will be buying a $65 ticket and seeing The National. Since you asked.

    ...

It's spread out in various venues over the city. Last year I wound up at Dante's, Mississippi Studios, Berbati's Pan, and Holocene, but there are other venues as well. They didn't do the big headlining shows in Pioneer Square last year, so I'm not sure how that works. I guess they'll cordon it off somehow.

Sorry, I was a bit excited to see a lineup that didn't suck and was on the West Coast. How spread out are those venues? Is it like a SXSW vibe?

I've never done SXSW, but the venues are all over the city. Are you familiar with the layout of Portland at all?

I've been once or twice, but never to venues - looking at Google Maps it seems pretty centered in downtown?

Portland's on a quadrant system, demarcated by the Willamette River (vertically) and Burnside Street (horizontally). Downtown is in the SW quadrant, and a lot of the shows will be taking place there, but last year there were also shows in N. Portland (actually the NE quadrant, but there's a separate NE Portland so they call it North) and Southeast Portland. The public transit system here is pretty good, though, and it's relatively easy to get between quadrants in a timely manner. It just requires a little planning ahead of time once the schedules are out.

Panda Bear better drift South for a Bay Area one-off.

Oh man. If I wasn't going to be completely broke from a wedding and ATP in the 2 weeks preceding that I would totally go.

I could fly from NY to Portland after hanging around NYC after ATP. I mean, since I'ma have to fly anyway. And that's a really good lineup.

Panda Bear is listed for 9/8, so I don't know if that counts as being part of the official festival or not, but yeah. Awesome either way.

Hannah has alerted me to this awesome lineup. It is on the way home from ATP anyway. It wouldn't cost me any additional money to do a stopover, and I have to change my ticket dates already due to family stuff. Hmmm.

Does anyone have feedback as to how useful a VIP pass is -- as in, do you always get into the venues you want, or do the popular shows get filled up way early? If I'm considering flying to Portland for this, I want to make sure that I can actually see Okkervil River instead of being stuck in a line outside.

I don't know much about the VIP wristbands. I do know that last year a good many of the venues were taking either money or festival passes, and at a certain point they stopped taking money and started only letting in those with festival bands. This doesn't answer your question but is peripherally related. For the most part last year I tended to get there early for things I really wanted to see, but there were some pretty bad conflicts and I missed some things. Venue proximity has a little bearing on that, too. I didn't really do a lot of traveling between venues in different parts of town - I tended to just pick the area with the most to offer me and go for that. It sort of came down to listing priority tiers and planning out my travels according to them.

Popular shows do fill early so pick your arrival time to suit. I spent 2hrs waiting to get in to the Crystal Ballroom a couple of years ago. Venue hopping is not really practical. I did it once (going from The Crystal to Berbati's but I think I lucked out)

Berbati's, Dantes & The Roseland are all within 200yds of each other give or take and all are on or close to Burnside St. The Doug Fir and The Crystal Ballroom are also on Burnside but further away.

This is a pretty good line up. I'm definitely doing one other festival outside of So Cal this year. I was going to go with Outside Lands, but plans didn't turn out the way they were supposed to.
