Thread: The Default Thread

So we went out last in the snow and my friend's car got hit. I freaked out of course, but everyone was calm as can be. I've never been in an accident so they all got weirded out by my response. Apparently this kind of thing happens all the time in Winter Wonderland weather, but it's new to me.

No issues with driving it, I love driving the thing. Mechanically, it gets exhausting.

I've yet to drive a Prius, but I have driven a Cruz. It's got an awful interior and the acceleration is not to my preference. It handles turns very awkwardly and after 75mph becomes very unstable steering wise; way to sensitive and shitty suspension specifically.

It has all the fancy satellite/Bluetooth hookups etc which are neat but I don't see these cars lasting the longhaul

Yeah, my big thing is that if I get a hybrid, I don't want it to FEEL like a hybrid when I'm driving. I want something with zip.

The one thing I don't like about the prius I drive is that the rear window is at a strange angle so it makes me a bit nervous sometimes. But the gas mileage is really, really great. And I don't see the necessity in needing or wanting a car to have zip or to accelerate so if that's something it lacks it hasn't bothered me.

Do you get weird reflections? Why does it make you nervous?

No, not weird reflections, it just took some getting used to how small (and angled) the rear window was in comparison to the Honda civic/accords I've always driven before. I feel like the prius also has a pretty bad blind spot. I also admittedly don't understand this "prius drivers are shitty driver" mantra -- SO many people in the Bay Area drive them.

And Bev -- you realize there's usually a "passing" lane on most roads? I mean, maybe you don't. You're pretty dumb.

I hate this about a lot of newer cars. The rear windshields are too sloped, they don't give enough view space, and the side view mirrors aren't in standard rectangular-ish shapes anymore which I don't like.

The reason you don't grasp the mantra you speak of, is because it's not that Prius drivers are shitty drivers... the cars just aren't built strong or fast enough to carry their inflated egos and sense of entitlement down the highway.

In my opinion, the only people with the right to an inflated ego are those that believe they have cracked the DaVinci Code-sequel riddles surrounding the Hannah Anderson hoax.

The inflated ego characterization/diss of prius drivers held a lot more weight like, 15 years ago when the car was first introduced and people were even more resistant to the reality of global warming and foreign oil dependence, but now? But now? I mean, seriously, holding onto the idea that the primary source of your day to day transportation needs should be a vehicle that's STRONG and FAST and HEMI as some sort of physical manifestation of one's virility is pretty fucking stupid.

I mean, if anything, look to the people shelling out Tesla money for those cars for the inflated egos.

Right. Are the drivers of other -- American made even-- hybrid cars also entitled?

That episode came out in the beginning 2006. I remember because my then boyfriend from Holland came out to visit and was sorely disappointed that he did not see priuses all over San Francisco. So, 8 years ago? I think there are a lot more prius drivers now, anyway.

I have a Honda Civic; bought it brand new 10 years ago and I'm driving it into the ground. Big dent in the door and I knocked my driver's side mirror off once when I was pulling out of the garage. Because I'm not buying a new car every three years and drive one that is beat up but has really great gas mileage, I feel like I should have a sense of entitlement too.
