Golden Voice aka Paul Tollet should contact Buck Williams Management (R.E.M.'s management team) in North Carolina NOW and get some "feelers" to see if R.E.M. would do Coachella 2011. R.E.M. seems to be one of those bands who plan stuff two years down-the-road, so contacting their management team NOW would probably be a good idea.

Are you telling us you'd prefer ONO as in Yoko? Actually, I'd like to see Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band as well as R.E.M. for Coachella 2011, come to think of it.

new album in the spring possibly
Members of R.E.M. have been spending a lot of time in recording studios. The band’s guitarist, Peter Buck, recently collaborated with The Decemberists and helped form the supergroup Tired Pony with longtime R.E.M. contributor Scott McCaughey. Now, according to the band’s website, the follow-up to 2008’s Accelerate has finished recording at the Hansa Studio in Berlin.
Jacknife Lee (U2, Snow Patrol, Bloc Party) will begin mixing the album this fall and “all signs are pointing towards a Spring 2011 release” for the yet-to-be-titled LP. In an interview with BBC, Buck says the band is “very excited” about their latest effort.
I hope REM play Coachella some day sooner rather than later.....I thought I heard the new material was left over stuff from the Accelerate material, or is it all new?
Upcoming Shows:
Pitchfork Festival: 7/19 @ Union Park
Mountain Oasis Festival: 10/25-27
Coachella: 4/11-13 @ Empire Polo Fields
Apparently there have been new studio sessions.
The only "leftover" songs from the Accelerate sessions that I know of are "On The Fly" and "Staring down the Barrell of the Middle Distance". Whether they'll end up on a new R.E.M. studio album in 2011 is anyone's guess. The new studio album is scheduled for release in Spring 2011, as is the new Baseball Project album--the Baseball Project is a spin-off R.E.M. band featuring Scott McCaughey/Peter Buck/Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate)/Linda Pitmon (Golden Smog). R.E.M. and Coachella 2011 would be perfect timing. Maybe they could also ink a deal to have The Baseball Project play, too, since two of The Baseball Project's band members would already be there. (That's through Ground Control Touring, Brooklyn, NY, Paul Tollet, in case you're reading this.) Heck, if The Baseball Project got booked, maybe Paul T. could go all the way and get The Dream Syndicate to reunite for 2011. Yeah, Coachella 2011 with R.E.M., The Baseball Project, AND The Dream Syndicate would be very cool.

REM finish recording new album
The as-yet-untitled studio effort is due out in spring 2011
REM have revealed that they have finished recording their new album.
The as-yet-untitled studio effort was produced by Jacknife Lee, who previously worked with the group on 2008's 'Accelerate', and who has also produced the likes of Kasabian, Snow Patrol and Editors, reports Billboard.com.
Set to be released in spring 2011, the band's 15th studio album was recorded at the Music Shed in New Orleans and at Berlin's Hansa Studios, where U2's 'Achtung Baby' and David Bowie's '"Heroes"' were recorded. Additional material was also recorded in Nashville.

Touring guitarist? What, so Buck's out? When I saw them it was Stipe, Buck, and Mills... why would it be any different? The only piece that is never fully REM as of late is the touring drummer...
So if anybody talked to a full-time touring guitarist that isn't one of the actual members of REM, they're full of shit.
R.E.M.'s "touring guitarist" and 2nd studio session guitarist is Scott McCaughey. I did read somewhere that Scott said REM had no intentions to tour with the new album to be released in March 2011, but that does not mean they won't do some promotion stuff, including a few one-off shows here and there, TV appearances, etc. Just not a year long, full-fledged tour. I think that's what Scott meant. I know Scott & Peter Buck's "other" side band, The Baseball Project, have a new album coming out, too, and are pencilling-in dates for summer shows 2011. I would welcome REM to Coachella, and on the same night as Wire & Neil Young--if that would be possible. The first song from REM's new album is available for download at http://www.remhq.com if anyone's interested. Another new song, featuring Eddie Vedder, called "It Happened Today", is supposed to be released on December 22nd on iTunes.
