    Which is correct?

    "A Majority of..."
    "The Majority of..."

I think it might work like "A dog..." and "The dog..." The latter speaks of a specific dog. The former is just some dog. If you've already established the group before, I think you would use "the" instead of "a," because you've already mentioned them. But I think even if you haven't mentioned them before, you can introduce them with either "the" or "a."

EDIT: Wait, but if you are introducing this majority group, I don't think you can use "the" unless you've already mentioned the group that they are a part of. For example, I don't think you can say, "The majority of dogs like to bark," without having previously talked about dogs.

Grammar is important. Capitalization is the difference between helping your Uncle Jack off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse.

I have been noticing more and more a giant problem with people not knowing how to properly use apostrophes. It's been a problem for a long time, but it's starting to become an epidemic. It makes me want to cry.

As I've noted before, most problems that self-described "Grammar Nazis" are actually referring to are orthographical and not grammatical in nature. Not to say that grammar mistakes do not abound.

But, yes, the English language is the most inconsistent mess of ridiculous rules.

Yeah, I've only gotten through the poem by reading it in stages. The two words that tripped me up were aver and Melpomene.

For me, correct grammar just sounds right, but I am unable to recall the correct vocabulary defining grammar's rules. Also, I'm not overly bothered by poor sentence structure, misspelled words or improper grammar, but it certainly slows down the communicative process.

Some of these depend on regional variations.

The difference here is between proper pronunciation and vernacular. Proper pronunciation is the baseline, which is maintained by the good folks at the Oxford English Dictionary (the Queen's English), while vernacular is the language or dialect spoken by the ordinary people in a particular country or region.

The Oxford English Dictionary doesn't change much, while vernacular is in almost constant flux. Webster's dictionary is very close to formalized vernacular. Wherein, words are formally entered that have common meanings across several regions. For example, selfie was added this year.

It's important to have a baseline not subject to the whims and fancy of popular culture. It allows you to understand and be understood by those around you, regardless of region.

Intelligence itself is a bourgeois social construct which keeps separate the haves from the have-nots. Time and again the haves have put forward this fairy tale of 'smart' and 'dumb', with the 'dumb' all too often constituting a catch-all category of losers, misfits, EDM fans, Republicans and schoolteachers.. a disparate group to be sure. RISE UP STUPIDOS AND OVERTHROW THE YOKE OF INTELLECT.
