    Default Drink Drank Drunk: A lesson in grammar

    Maybe this doesn't deserve its own thread, but I know incorrect grammar isn't only a pet peeve of mine. The following is a short lesson in the use of the word drink and its tenses. Feel free to add other grammar concerns or pet peeves or flame me for starting a 3rd grammar thread. I'm always up for learning more language rules.


    Base Form drink / Past Simple drank / Past Participle drunk / Gerund drinking

    Present Simple

    He usually drinks four glasses of water a day.

    Present Simple Passive

    Wine is drunk at meals.

    Present Continuous

    She is drinking gin and juice.

    Present Continuous Passive

    The new beer is being drunk by customers.

    Present Perfect

    Peter has drunk three cups of coffee this afternoon.

    Present Perfect Passive

    All the juice has been drunk.

    Present Perfect Continuous

    I have been drinking champagne all morning.

    Past Simple

    Jack drank a glass of apple juice.

    Past Simple Passive

    A glass of apple juice was drunk by that customer.

    Past Continuous
    She was drinking some kool-aid when the man bumped into her.

    Past Continuous Passive

    Gatorade was being drunk when they finished the game.

    Past Perfect

    We had drunk all the water before the order arrived.

    Past Perfect Passive

    All the water had been drunk before the order arrived.

    Past Perfect Continuous

    We had been drinking our beverages for ten minutes when he finally arrived.

    Future (will)

    She will drink sweet tea.

    Future (will) passive

    Soda will be drunk by the customers at table six.

    Future (going to)

    We are going to drink French wine with our meal.

    Future (going to) passive

    French wine is going to be drunk by the customers at table six.

    Future Continuous

    This time tomorrow we will be drinking a margarita.

    Future Perfect

    He will have drunk three bottles by the end of the evening.

    Future Possibility

    He might drink lemonade.

    Real Conditional

    If he drinks wine, I will drive home.

    Unreal Conditional

    If he drank wine, I would drive home.

    Past Unreal Conditional

    If he had drunk wine, I would have driven home.

    Present Modal

    I should drink some water.

    Past Modal

    You should have drunk some milk to calm your stomach.

    I did state that I'm up for learning more. So, constructive critisicm welcome. You'll notice there are 2 uses of its in my first post. I got one of them correct, which I guess is still an F. Damn. I'm failing my own grammar class.

    There was a story on NPR about how language evolves, and they predicted that in the future, the past tense of words like that would all end up like "think thank thunk", "bring brang brung" instead of "think thought", "bring brought," etc.

    English is a very rule-breaking and irregular lanuage. It would be nice if it followed patterns more like latin languages, but the thought of our language changing like that saddens me a little.
