Scientists say more Gulf oil flowing than thought (AP)

AP - Scientists studying the blown-out well in the Gulf of Mexico now say it's leaking at least twice as much oil and possibly five times as much as original estimates.
Maybe even a million TIMES!! We don't know, we're just throwing shit out there. You guys scared yet? You know, worst case scenario.....

I took the long way to work this morning in my SUV so I could listen to the pundits on talk radio and then I let it idle in in my parking spot for at least 4 hours. Im getting like 12 miles to the gallon in this bad boy.

    Obama's got this guys.

"The American people should know that from the moment this disaster began, the federal government has been in charge of the response effort,"

Obama's insistence that his administration was in charge of dealing with the disaster were a marked change in language. Previously, administration officials had emphasized that while they were overseeing BP's actions, the oil company had the expertise and equipment to do the job.

BP said if this did or didn't work they were already drilling a pipe next to the now capped well to relieve the pressure. So if it well is truly capped, do you think the administration will let them continue with the new well?

They're relief wells. They're still needed to properly cap the main well.

They'll be drilling again. In the same spot. With the same equipment.

Yea I wish you were wrong but I bet you will be right. Part of what Obama is going to do for 30 days or 6 months or whatever the fuck it is, is to curtail all new drilling. BP will just say this is not a new well and new drilling, just an expansion or some BS like that ...

I'm surprised how focused the criticism / blame is with this single well, its operations, and BP. Concern over drilling in the same spot again should be no different than concern with all other offshore rigs. What makes you think that every other platform in the world doesn’t pose the same risks? Accidents, storms, terrorism, and incompetence all happen. The likelihood of occurrence may be low, but when something does happen the significance is clearly catastrophic. This could have happened to any oil company in any body of water.

This is more a failure of society than anything else. We’ve allowed everyone to play with fire in the middle of a dry forest. Instead of spending protesting efforts and Millions of dollars investigating and prosecuting BP and its executives, I really hope the focus going forward is eliminating our dependence on offshore drilling. Not just placing moratoriums on new drilling, but beginning to sunset existing rigs. It can be done.

I dont see anything like that happening until gas is $8 a gallon and people demand new sources for energy. Americans seem content with problems as long as they dont effect them that drastically on a personal level. That may just be me being pessimistic though.

This is way too simple of an explanation but which car would you trust more? A new car that never had an accident or a car that was totaled and was repaired like new. The worst thing that could happen is that they never fully cap this well. Then 2nd worst thing is that they cap the well and everyone just forgets this fuck up .....

Unfortunately, us Americans are too pampered and complacent to get off our collective asses and really do something about it until it comes and bites us on said collective asses.

Your analogy isn't the best because instead of New Car / Repaired Car, the choice is really No Car / Repaired Car.

See, I completely agree with both of you in the sense that America is not ready for this. But, it’s pathetic that we have developed into a finger-pointing society where condemning others creates personal satisfaction and political capital. Washington especially has become adept at the blame game. Bumper stickers boycotting BP, prosecuting Oil Company execs, or watered-down lipstick legislation won’t solve this issue. So if we’re going to give up on the core problem, why spend any effort at all playing the blame game.

Realistically, many people cast their blame and stop there. And unfortunately, the 'fixes' you speak of are often nothing more than hollow solutions leaving just as much residual risk on the table.

Apparently, BP has now temporarily suspended pumping mud in order to assess the impact it has had on the outflow of oil thus far.

    Wtf?
