Does anyone know where I can get a San Francisco-style "Mission" burrito in L.A.? For those times I'm feeling homesick you know...

Basically you need to go to a good taqueria or truck and explain to them how to make it. Just ask for a dry burrito and then specify every single thing you want in it (lettuce cheese etc).

It's a goddam burrito, wrapped in foil. That's it. You don't need to add "San Francisco" or "Mission-style" to claim some sort of provincial pride.

Tell that to the people who are accustomed to la taqueria.
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

It's much different than an actual burrito (taqueria or restaurant) from Los Angeles.

    Just sayin...

    So, if:
    - The tortilla is steamed,
    - It's made in Chipotle-style assembly line, and
    - It's wrapped in foil and eaten upright
then it is a San Francisco burrito?

Steamed tortilla, shit loads of rice, shit loads of beans, other shit loads of stuff inside, different types of salsa's, larger than usual, not "wet", and wrapped in foil.

Los Angeles has a much more traditional approach to the burrito, mission burrito's are very different, to a Mexican at least.

Yes, it's nearly impossible to find authentic Mexican food in SF. Mexican food is the one thing my friends that moved up there crave when they come to visit L.A.

Any of these recommendations walking distance from the Wiltern? My friends are hitting up Gaslight Anthem and looking for a bite to eat beforehand.

Have you tried both regional burritos? By your logic, all pizzas are the same: all are flattened pieces of dough with tomato sauce and toppings on top and baked in an oven. Yeah right. One of the awesome things about food are the regional differences. Even San Diego has its own way of making a burrito.

The main differences between SF and LA, from what I can remember, is that SF burritos have larger tortillas that are grilled, and include Mexican rice, guacamole, sour cream, cheese, and whatever meat you want. It's also made assembly line style, where you point at the toppings you want in front of a mirror.

And no no no, Chipotle is not the same (which I like on its own, btw. I liken it to Panda Express' version of Chinese food).

For anyone needing a reason to go to Casita Del Campo for food or a drink, now you can combine it with a hilarious show. Chico's Angels are back for 2 weeks

    Love Boat Chicas

I think the Tuesday/Wednesday performances are halfoff at Goldstar.

If you want the best burrito in LA, go to El Taurino.

forgot what its called. i wanna say tacos el unico but i could be wrong

the kibbitz room at canters is the best small live music venue/bar in LA. its seedy as hell and awesome. go on a wednesday or friday only

Joe's on Abbot Kinney is my favorite brunch spot in that area.

If you can stretch it to Santa Monica I LOVE both Huckleberry and Amelia's.

You guys are awesome. Always ready with the suggestions. Joe's looks amazing, but probably a bit high end for the group I'm going with. Unfortunately, it looks like Amelia's, Huckleberry and Literati don't have liquor licenses. With the group I'm going with, mimosas are non-negotiable. We definitely can do Santa Monica if you have any other suggestions for places with liquor licenses.

Btw, this thread needs to be re-named. I hardly ever go to just bars (although some of the suggestions in here seem cool). It's mostly a foodie thread now, of which I am unabashedly one. Don't care.

Just spent a weekend in Santa Monica. Liquid Kitty is dark and funky but surprisingly clean. $5 for a PBR and fat whiskey shot, called the "Low Life", I think. From what I recall, music on the Friday night we went was varied between indie rock, funk and oldies. Someone called it a dive but I thought it was too nice to be a dive. Although it did have a taco truck parked outside.
