Thread: Sahara lights less impressive this year?

  1. #1

Default Sahara lights less impressive this year?

Im just thinking about this now, because it doesnt really matter, but the lights seemed maybe less impressive this year? Maybe it was just the lack of the fun orbs on the ceiling. what do you guys think?

I thought that this year the lights were infinitely better than last year. Not enough lasers though

The lights, visuals, and tent size were amazing this year and were reminiscent of an Insomniac production...which is all win

absolutely not... strobes, lazers, ceiling lights, LED DJ booth, and the camera above the booth so you can see what they were doing?? they were WAY better this year

yeah, this year's sahara design/decorations is probably my least favorite.

Huh. I liked the lighting more than any other year I've been coming (07). Different strokes.

I thought the lighting was great. Wish the lasers were used more, but overall it was great. I feel if you saw Orbital then you know how awesome the lights were in there.

i saw orbital...still thought lighting was a bit lame. i think the low fan lazers were brought by orbital. i didn't see those getting used any other time.

the best lighting during orbital was the glow eruption from our group......

I wasn't in the Sahara too much, but I noticed it was windier this year more than last year. All the fog blew away very quickly and it was hard to see the beams for the lasers and lights. The whole truss set-up was different as well.. They had long trussing along the top of the tent running vertical.. Last year they had the truss come down into little squares and the lights were dropped a lot lower. It's all the same equipment they were using. The lights they used were the same ones they have been using forever (Mostly Martin Macs). I'm sure the laser projectors were the same as previous years as well. The beams looked really thin so I am pretty sure they were solid state, but I am not sure. If anyone could find out who did the lasers, I would be grateful. I think they started using full colored lasers in 2008.

I really miss the 2 projectors they used to shine on the outside of the Sahara tent.. That looked wicked as hell. I believe they were 20,000 Lumens each.

P.S. The lighting/stages at Coachella are FAR better than at EDC even though they use the same production companies. Also, if you want to see big stage productions look at some electronic events in Europe. They blow America away.

the production was great, they just used too much white.. in the sahara, and the campground.. they had those great light rigs and the tubes on the ceiling, but mostly just used white light instead of colors..

yeah, i noticed the tube lights at first, but didn't catch myself noticing them throughout the rest of the fest... kind of a waste to me.

Although, the color strobes were tight..

Are you joking? Did you see Benny Bennasi, Bassnectar, Deadmau5 or . . . ANYBODY for that matter in the Sahara? The visuals were mind blowing. If last year was better then I'd probably die of visual overload lol.

saw part of bennasi and deadmau5. the custom stage for mau5 was cool, but a little subdued...at least the part i saw.

who was it that had the neon robots walk out on stage with lasers coming from their arms? i was in the food court when i saw that on the screens...i ran over to check it out. that was pretty cool...

I was kind of underwhelmed by Deadmau5 set musically, but visually . . . the whole thing was EPIC, especially when he started the effects on the mouse head, and it started signing! I was like . . YES!

I liked that the lights on the roof went all the way to the back of the tent. Didn't they used to only have the little spinning strobe lights that far back in previous years?

Sasquatch has a really good line up, and it would allow me to see some that I missed at Coachella this year . . .but I'm in Boston and dont feel like treking all the way out again. Chicago is closer.

    Have fun though ;-)

Those were LEDs.. I don't know what you mean by spinning strobes.. Do you mean moving heads?

    Like this?

If so I wouldn't call it little, those cost $2000+ each.

These were the strobes they used:

    which are like $700 each..

I don't know what kind of LED Tubes they used.. but I think this is what some people were talking about when they said lights that go all the way back:

benny bennasi's lights at the beginning literally made me have to turn around because they were so intense. I wasnt ready! haha. That shit ruled until i turned around and walked to mojave for Fever Ray, then my eyes rolled!

i guess i was mistaken. i think i just miss the fun orbs on the ceiling. I'm probably also used to coachella's set up by now or something. Who knows. I wasn't disappointed in them, i just thought they may have pulled back and just kept the essential stuff. I dunno. Glad you guys liked the lights.
