Thread: tickets are a scam

  1. #1

    Default tickets are a scam

It's a real shame the organizers didn't put a cap on the # of tickets any one person could purchase on a give credit card or at a time. Funny how within 4 weeks of going on sale and 60 days before the event all the 3 day passes, Sat and Sun are sold out but there are over 500 tickets on sale on ebay and many many other tickets sites with prices as much as 4X the original! These poor kids who just wanna see a fucking rock concert can't go because of the greed that exists in this country. I hope there is a lesson learned here for all. And no, don't come back saying you should plan and buy your tickets early when there are soooo many for sale 2nd hand all over the web! Screw that! This is exactly the kind of capitalism Rage was against and I hope if they ever find out they cancel their Sunday show as they should!

you can get a 3 day pass on ebay right now for just over $300. Thats not much more than what it cost on ticketmaster.

3-day passes aren't getting off ebay for less than 500 bucks 98 percent of the time right now, and the few that do are kinda sketchy. You're not taking into account that the bids will jump another two hundred dollars in the last 12 hours of the auction. Camping passes alone seem to be going for 300 a piece.

If you really tried I bet you could find one for $350- $375 in the next few weeks. The hype has died down a bit since they announced those 3 new Rage shows. I do see a lot that are about to end for what you're saying. I got a feeling for the next couple of weeks there will be some that end for less than $400.

I'm praying that'll be the case, believe me. What I'm worried about is that the drop from Rage's other dates will be quickly offset by tickets becoming even scarcer now that there's already been a couple weeks of panicked buying. I wonder what percentage of the tix were bought by scalpers?

i don't understand. what do you have against making money? just go out and make a boatload somehow and be done with it, and SPEND! many stupider than me have done that and that's why i said at last just fuck that. i want some too. christ this is not jesusland.

rage isn't anti-capitalism, they put out a message to open our minds, to do something positive to lend a hand, to have a voice. that's what this country was founded on, but greed does take us off-track. you need money to do anything. sure it can get you laid and buy a big-polluter hummer and with ignorance
oppress people too. but money also can help people, with a little heart and wisdom. not necessarily like bill gates trying to throw millions at africa and they not knowing what to do with that, but like helping out with the unique knowledge and experience only you possess. the money is just a means. so go out and make some cash, and don't forget the others who haven't got a leg up yet, and FACILITATE some hard-rockin knockin my peoples!

this is for what it's worth, just sharing, i already know i'm an ass. (i'm NOT a scalper)

At a four ticket limit there's not a whole lot TM could have done.
It is a bit crap though hearing people say you should have been quicker
when in all probability, tickets wouldn't have sold out YET if it weren't for people buying purely for the purpose of scalping (for a profit).
I've done it before and don't feel like I could sell tickets for a profit again but if it would get me money for Coachella tickets then... who knows?!

Good luck to every one - See you there! : )

Here's just the latest. But there's been a lot of stories like this over the years...

    http://www.latimes.com/news/nationwo...,6827615.story

This is one problem with merely "funding" the healing of Africa. Without living it, knowing its people, its culture and ways, it doesn't matter how much money you "invest" if it gets in the wrong hands. How do you know who to trust without being an active part of the community yourself, engaged in a "culture of trust"? One could even do more harm than good, an ongoing debate over the Gates Trust.

And also, as the article above points out (L.A. Times link), for financial capital to really work in Africa, you need to build an elaborate infrastructure for investing across many fledgling industries, something evolved in the Western world over centuries. And there is all the collateral damage that goes along with that. The pollution, environmental harm, family and cultural breakdown and neuroses, and much much more are the many negative impacts of an indiginous culture becoming "industrialized."

Only a few years ago many scoffed at a concept called "global warming." I remember going to concerts and my friends yelling "Nuke the Whales!" That always bothered me.

I once read a sports quote by Pele, the Brazilian soccer great. When asked if he thought the Olympics would ever be held in Africa, he replied: "No, because the Olympics is big business. When one thinks of Africa, they think of the heart, it's not about business."

    Anyway that's what Pele said.

I want to read more of Jeremy Rifkin, a Wharton (U. Penn) grad who talks a lot about what he terms "Social Capital." In a nutshell, his studies explain that all financial capital exists on a bed of trust, built on the relationships of people in a vast network, or culture. A culture of trust. He says that without such a culture, economic growth would not be sustained. He goes on to point out the great cultural institutions of America as historically pivotal in the shaping of our great economic growth.

And conversely he points out how at the end of the Soviet era, when billions were poured into kindling economic free-enterprise growth in Russia, it failed miserably because there just was no foundation of trust: it was to a large extent because of the great cultural institutions that were destroyed during the communist era. Russia would need more than money; she would need a renewed social identity, a network of trust, built on self-sustaining communities interacting and communicating. Rifkin points out the dangers of taking for granted such organic community in America.

You can google Jeremy Rifkin or check out his books on Amazon. His book from around 10 years ago caused a big stir, called "The End of Work." The title fascinated me. In it he talks about how technology will supplant the need for a fully deployed labor force and the resultant social impact of a new economy in which simply not everyone will need to "work" in the sense of a typical job. It's controversial because a utilitarian philosophy is a big part of what the modern world has been founded upon, particularly the U.S.

I think it was Hobbes, or a contemporary, who said that if your neighbor is busy, occupied with labor or absorbed in some industry, then he is far less likely to do you harm.

Anyway, I think this predicates what Rifkin begins to explain as the need to continue to uphold and recognize the importance of "Social Capital" as a more solid foundation for a peaceful (and more fulfilling) nation or society, more important than an "addiction" to a job-centered economy. He's not talking about socialism or communism or capitalism. I think it would be safe to call it an attempt at defining "humanism"?

Is there another way? Is economic might necessarily the answer? These are novel questions for us, but I think important to discuss for a future generation inheriting the planet. We should think and read and go deeper.

That's one positive way that music can have an impact, especially live music, a coming together, a unique element I experience going to Coachella, the re-hatching of a "culture of trust"?

Continue the dialogue!!! Silence = death! But don't be trite or too off-the-cuff. Think and consider, and be respectful of the effort.

The Gates Foundation doesn't just "throw money", maybe you kumquats can find out a bit more about a charity before [proverbially] running your gums.
