Default Slint Tonight At The Fonda

I won two free tickets from Goldenvoice's myspace, but I now have to confess that I don't really know shit about them, much less whether or not I want to see them. Anyone here got a convincing argument for me before I tell them to turn my tickets over to some other hopeful?

Because I have some friends visiting who I thought might want to go but then they took off for SD unexpectedly and foolishly, I believe. I sorry, Dani. I'll rescind my reservation.

Tonight's performance will feature Slint playing "Spiderland" - one of the finest albums of all time - from start to finish. If you have any interest in post-rock - Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Godspeed, Explosions in the Sky, et. al. - then you owe it to yourself to go tonight and see this dark, complex, and completely gorgeous album played live.

But, I suspect that you don't.

So here's your reason: this is a great band that nobody in LA gives a shit about. They sold out shows all over the country during their reunion tour in 2005 - including three at the Metro in Chicago, which is where I saw them - except for their date here at the Avalon. And tonight's performance at the Fonda is....well, they're giving away free tickets. So obviously LA hates Slint. So obviously, you will love them. Right?

Slint are fucking awesome. No one should ever pass on seeing them. Their album Spiderland is one of the best ever.

Did you go see them at Bimbo's last night, Erik? That would have been a fucking fantastic venue to see them at.

I'd go, but I'm not in town. Sigh.

It's not sold out? Insanity. What is wrong with people? Seriously. LA is the town where every gig sells out eventually.

Well, I thought hard and careful about this, but at the end of the day I had to recognize that (a) of those bands, I only really like Sigur Ros, and then only maybe half their catalog and only really when I'm on something, which (b) I can't be for tonight.

So I sent GV a message apologizing profusely and asking that they pass the tix along.

I'll be there. I'm leaving in about an hour. I had to finish Harry Potter first. I hope they play longer than they did at Pitchfork. Spiderland is amazing, but its only 6 songs, and I need more Slint in my life.

Show was not packed. There was this really annoying drunk couple who seemed hell bent on ruining the show for everyone by screaming during the songs and being general assholes. One of them was a jackass to my friend, and Gabe, as a true gentlemen, told them to back the fuck off, and they left, which elicited much cheers. Slint played all of Spiderland, then did the Slint single and closed with that other track that they played at Pitchfork. Good Morning Captain sounded fantastic. On the last song, Brian's guitar wasn't working, so we didn't get the guitar solo that he adds to the track. All in all, another good Slint-sperience. O, and it was good to see Gabe, Chris and Tessa again.

Slint are returning in 2013 in some capacity, according to Pajo. At the Lance Bangs documentary night a few months ago he mentioned to me that they had been vaguely discussing recording a new album together. Holy balls.

    According to an interview:

Fashion sense and side-projects aside, what does the future hold for David Pajo? “I don’t have plans to release anything yet. I’m always writing and have ideas, but I need to tie up some loose ends in my domestic life first. And bands like Slint and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are the priority.” So, contrary to what pretty much everyone has been lead to believe, Slint have a future? “We still communicate regularly and we’ve got some surprises for next year that fans will be excited about. I know I am.”
So that could be Lance Bangs' documentary and, at very least, another tour? Maybe a 7"? Hopefully a Steve Albini-produced album?

He posted a screen cap of him asking Pajo if they are playing Coachella and the response was something to the degree of no live shows next year
