It's my 5th Coachella, but my first year at the F-ing lake! Can't wait!

One question I have is that it seems like you can play (or listen) to loud music during the day and late at night here without getting shut down, is this true? What's your experience? Any insight would be appreciated, thanks!

This will be my 9th year camping at Lake Cahuilla. They say there is noise curfew at 10pm, but I have never seen it enforced. People often play music until the sun comes up. There are usually a few full DJ setups with pretty good sound systems.

There is actually a warning on the Lake Cahuilla Reservations page now, warning that it will be loud because of Coachella campers!
    LakeCahuillaWarning.jpg
    PARK ALERT MESSAGE

Please Note be aware Coachella Festival Dates are - April 11-20,2014 & Stage Coach Festival Dates are - April 25-27,2014. Campers attending the festival will primarily camp at Lake Cahuilla Campground. There will be loud noise, one vehicle per site for the primitive camp sites as well as overflow.

What's transportation like between the campground and the festival grounds? First time here!

This sounds like fun after finding out I was bailed on by the person I was going with , with the camping spot inside.I picked a spot up Thursday afternoon four days for weekend 2.... only 3 more weeks.

It's a 5-10 minute drive. Theres usually a guy or a couple different guys who run private shuttles from their car for like $10 a person. I've also taken a cab. The best way to go if you aren't driving is to make friends with other campers and hitch a ride with someone. Everyone is going to the festival so it's pretty easy to find your way over there. Getting home from the festival it is best to make sure you have your ride set up in advance. Cabs can be hard to get on the way back late at night since there are so many people leaving Coachella. Traffic between the Lake Cahulla and Coachella Fest is pretty much non-existant which is awesome. The lake is on the opposite side as the freeway and all of the hotels so that is nice!

Awesome, thanks for the info! If we wanted to drive from the campsite to the festival, what's neighborhood parking like? My friend and I are walkers so we aren't afraid to park a bit away in a neighborhood (maybe with less traffic) and hoof it. Otherwise, what's parking like at the festival? (a cluster F I'd imagine)

There is NO 'neighborhood parking'. At All.
Another good option would be to bring bikes and ride to the venue. Should take 15-20 minutes, and on the way out after the show ends each day you'll be home faster than if you were driving.

Theres no "Neighborhood Parking" like Bhomburg said. Getting into the lots at the festival has never taken long at all, they are super efficient. Leaving usually takes a little bit longer, but it's usually not bad if you are in the corner lot closest to Lake Cahuilla. I forget which lot# it is. There have been a couple rare occasions when it has taken like an hour to leave parking for some unknown reason, but that's not normal.

They don't close it during the Coachella weekends.

Which weekend? Why doesn't calling them overseas work? Just use our country code (1). You can only make reservation by phone, so you might be out of luck if you can't call them.

Anybody know if there's any big differences between overflow camping and the other campsites besides the lack of electricity/water? I've been calling a lot of Off-Site Campsites and Lake Cahuilla is the only one that isn't completely booked. First Coachella and trying to have the most epic time possible!

I'll be staying in the overflow camping area too... does anyone know how far away the overflow is from the main camping (if far at all?)

I camped in the overflow area my first 2 years at Lake Cahuilla. The biggest difference in the overflow, other than no electricity and water is the lack of shade. There are only a few sparse trees in overflow so if you want shade you will need to make it yourself. An EZ Up awning would make a huge difference! Other than that the only difference is that there is not a paved road, it's dirt.

Overflow is right next to the main camping area. It touches it. But there is also a "primitive area" across the lake which is about a 15 minute walk from the main camping area. I have hung out with people over there, but never camped on that side. I have heard that it sometimes smells like manure on that side because there are horse stables over there, but I have not noticed it.

    Love Lake Cahuilla:
    -- fire pits
    -- shorter shower lines
    -- no flood lights 24/7
-- tents are spaced out many, many feet apart, rather than inches
    -- electrical outlets
-- 6 miles from the fest
-- very easy to drive to convenience store/coffee/food/etc. in the morning
    -- swimming pool

If anybody's still looking for a spot, we have space at our campsite Weekend 1. Developed (i.e. electrical outlets) and lakeside. Coming up from SD Thursday afternoon.
Comes with parking space, too. We can split the cost ($97 for 3 nights). Shoot me a PM.

Last year was the first dust storm in my 10 years at Coachella. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Glass bottles are fine, they even let you bring kegs. They don't search your car or you belongings or anything.

I was told the lake really never sells out of primitive camping, can't do it online you just have to go and do it.

Primitive camping is some last minute shit you'd rather not have.
lake Cohuila was awesome this year though. My first Coachella and after spending an hour in On-Site camping I'm glad I didn't go do that.
I will never spend money to stay on-site after witnessing how brutal and gnarly it is.

the primitive camping was WAY off to the far end away from all the main camping, no electricity or water spouts and shitty ground to pitch your tent on.
the loud party campsite was over there this year though. Only one camp setup in normal camping had a DJ setup and they only used it Thursday night, never again all weekend.

Bottom Line: Lake Cohuila is close, cheap and awesome if you get a regular spot. Not the last minute primitive shit.
