Yes, this is terrible news. This should be in the music lounge.

This sucks. They are one of the few stations I actually liked.

Never listened, but I'm sure it's fucking shitty. Shitty that it's gone, not the station. But hey, there's always sport talk and pop crap on ClearwoodOne.

Although I never listened to this, we do have something very similar that is thriving in Minneapolis right now called the Current (89.3FM). It's member supported from Minnesota Public Radio, so no commercials.

You can stream for free at http://www.thecurrent.org with no additional downloads.

Their full playlist is also there-

Not bad though on Woxy you would never hear The Beatles, Wilco, Neil Young, the Clash and the Rolling Stones all in the same 30 minutes, not that there is anything wrong with playing these artists, they are all fantastic. They would trickle in the bigger names maybe once an hour or so and focus on the indie bands. Woxy had had awesome lounge acts as well.

Here's an example of a woxy playlist.

    4:02 pm You Know jj
4:04 pm Sing Sang Sung Air
4:08 pm Mind, Drips Neon Indian
4:11 pm Happy Home Talib Kweli & Madlib
    4:17 pm Cold Storage Aloha
4:20 pm Fear City Elliott Smith
4:24 pm Gypsy Davy (Lounge Act) Elvis Perkins In Dearland
4:27 pm Buriedfed Miles Benjamin AnthonyRobinson
4:32 pm Take Care Beach House
4:37 pm Rocket Working For A NuclearFree City
4:42 pm California Dreamer Wolf Parade
4:48 pm Hit The Wall Brendan Canning
4:53 pm Generator 1st Floor (Lo.. Freelance Whales
4:57 pm My Rights Versus Yours The New Pornographers

The good news is their website is still up with many of their musical archives and loung act performances and their message says they are still trying to keep it alive.

    WOXY Listeners, Fans and Friends...

Due to current economic realities and the lack of ongoing funding for WOXY's operations, we've been forced to suspend our live broadcasts as of March 23rd. We're continuing to explore options to keep The Future of Rock and Roll alive. For business inquiries, please contact Bryan Jay (bryan@woxy.com) or John at Future Sounds (john@futuresounds.com).

Thanks for your years of dedicated support.

I've been listening to Woxy for about 6 years and without them I wouldn't know of quite a few bands. It went from being the station I used to love to listen to because over the course of an hour I may have heard of one band but liked 95% of what I heard. Now I look at their playlists and know 80% of what they are playing but they always had something new. I would always see people with Woxy shirts at Coachella too.

Yes, this was quite the crushing blow yesterday when the plug was pulled. I was listening, enjoying "Answer to Yourself" by the Soft Pack and it finished, replaced by..... nothing. Being friends with a couple of the DJs let me know what was going on about a half hour prior, but it didn't make it any easier to deal with that silence.

I've been a listener for at least a decade, and WOXY opened my eyes to so much music out there that I am not sure how in the world I could ever get the same treatment elsewhere, but I'll look. There are a few on WOXY's message boards who hope that somehow the station once again rises from the ashes (they've been "shut down" a few times before) and continues to bring a great mixture of new and old tunes alike to our ears, but this time it seems a bit different... more of a potential final shutdown. And while I mourn that loss on a personal level, I am more concerned with the great minds and DJs involved over there, and them landing on their feet elsewhere, if that's what it comes to. I mean they all moved to Austin 6 months ago from Cincinnati to "go where the music was" in order to grow a more successful station... now all of them are suddenly jobless after being transplanted. Brutal.

I highly recommend this as an alternative, as Barb Abney, one of the Current's DJs, is an ex-WOXY DJ herself, and up there with the best in the biz.

This is sad. Really sad. I liked WOXY, they did a few great sessions with some bands I liked very much and I was fond of them.

Barb is very good... she wrote a little blurb about this a couple of days ago too

It's interesting... the Current usually doesn't play that many big names in a 30 minute block. Of the groups/artists in the playlist you mentioned, the Current in regular rotation plays
JJ, Talib Kweli, Elliot Smith, Beach House, Wolf Parade, and the New Pornographers... so it's a lot of the same stuff.

I will definitely give it a listen. I'm just crushed by the woxy news and didn't want to hear about some other indie station but it sounds decent enough.

It'll throw in it's fair share of duds every once and awhile, but overall it's really solid. The Current is the reason i attended Coachella for the 1st time back in 06 (that and with a lil hype from Rolling Stone). The music they play is very different from most others, and when you see a lot of groups/artists they play showing up on major festival bills, it makes you wanna attend.

The thing is, the station is a lot more refined, streamlined, and has a rotation of songs it plays now (but it's a big rotation... 5 songs played 3times/hour like a top 40 radio station) than it used to be a few years ago. They mix it up well with random choices new/old. Back in 05 when the station started and for the 1st 2-3 years, it was a complete random cluster-fuck mixed in with new songs. But it was a beautiful random cluster-fuck.
