That genre does not always get represented at every Coachella. Last year yeah Tool, Wolfmother, Coheed and Cambria, Eagles of Death Metal and Mogwai to some extent were the "heavy" bands and thats just not the case this year.

Some years a certain genre gets a few more than the previous year. It just cycles around. Like in 2005 there was a lot of hip hop and last year there wasnt as much. Maybe next year they get a few more heavy bands but this isnt Ozzfest so dont worry too much about it. At least there wont be drunk jocks running around everywhere.

The only heavier stuff I see is Rage and Circa Survive.

And that is just about all the harder rock I need. Maybe a couple more would be nice, but not necessary in my opinion.

Circa survive is not indie rock or Hard Rock/metal...they are usually grouped with the "new-wave emo" scene (ie fallout boy, my chemical romance, taking back sunday, etc), but I think they are far better than any of the bands in that genre.

When they had that blog deal and were asking for "Coachella-esq" bands to be considered for the line up I rallied for Mastodon to be considered. That didn't fucking happen though. I feel Coachella isn't quite the place for metal although I also feel that a wide array of generes should be represented and available for the crowd. One metal band in addition to the already few "harder rock than the other rock" bands would be sweet. There are few metal bands though that would fit the "coachella-esq" criteria. If a metal band were to be booked, I doubt anything real "death-core" would make the bill. It would have to be a band that, actually pretty much Mastodon is it.

First of all, I never called Circa Survive hard rock, I defined them as 'heavier,' as in, heavier than most of the stuff on the line up. Second, if you were to classify them, they would not be indie rock. I would put them under emo.

Fair to Midland. The just got signed to Serj Tankian record label. They have drawn comparisons to The Mars Volta and others. Honestly, they are nothing special. And I hear more At The Drive In rather than Mars Volta. But they are pretty heavy. Ill check them out if no one else is playing at the same time as them. However, Rage kicks enough ass no other hard rock metal bands are needed! But more is always welcome.
As for punk, Coachella was never really has had many "punk" bands. However its awesome to see Against Me! and Gogol Bordello on thier. Im stoked especially to see Gogol Bordello.
Who knows who else could be added. Afterall, Mindless Self Indulgence played in 04! Wish they could play this year.... but they are playing in Europe the exact same days as Coachella
