I am Very Far is a pretty good album, IMO. I have only been able to listen to it once, but I liked what I heard. Pretty different from their previous work though.

I just booked a room at Hotel Congress for Okkervil/Titus. Should be a fun night. I expect to have many drinks before and during the show...

Mexicans With Guns is playing tonight at Club Congress for the Opti Club. Free for Opti Club members, $3 for everybody else. 21+

I heard a little bit of the MWG LP while I was shopping for records the other day. It was interesting enough to get me out tonight. The Opti Club has some decent shows coming up. Check out the CC website for details.

The show last night was very fun. Mexicans With Guns played an interesting set. It's hard to pigeonhole what this guy was doing. His style was similar to Daedelus in that it was all over the place. The local DJs sucked it up as usual, but the Opti Club continues to be the sexiest and sweatiest dance party in Tucson.

^Nick (their bass player) left the band, but they are continuing on as a three piece. I saw the final show with Nick which was great. They also opened for our friends The Monotonix the last time they were in town. Mr. Free is doing a west coast tour at the end of summer/beginning of fall.

HoCo Fest (Sept 2-4 @ Club Congress) is shaping up nicely.

The kickoff party hosted by the Opti Club features Le Castlevania on the 1st.

The actual fest starts Sept 2 with Molotov.

Artists for night two haven't been announced yet.

The last night finishes with quite a bill...Devotchka, Calexico and Sergio Mendoza y La Orkestra.

In other CC news, I attended the sold out Cults show on Saturday. I showed up without a ticket, but they let in an additional 20 people which included me and my wife. Solid yet short show. Cults has won another new fan as I really hadn't heard them until Saturday.

I love Tucson, but I am moving to Illinois.

My 15 years in this town have been great ones. Met and married my wife here. Bought a couple of houses(sold one). Met many of my best friends, including a few boardies. Lots of great music and unforgettable shows. So, this is not goodbye, but see ya later. Aloha Tucson!

The Fox Theatre is a unique venue. I've seen numerous local performances there, but have never seen a touring act. Unfortunately they have had a very narrow range of shows, mainly catering to Tucson's aging hippies. Examples include booking people like Arlo Guthrie, Bela Fleck and Jim Messina. There was an infamous party thrown there before the restoration involving a local fire juggling troupe. I'm surprised the place didn't burn down.

Here's an interesting factoid from wiki:

"The building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a "Nationally Significant Structure" is so listed due to its unique decor and special acoustical treatment, 'Acoustone', designed due to the advent of "Talkie" movies, and is the only known example of the material in existence."
