Thread: Heavier stuff? any punk or metal?

  1. #1

Default Heavier stuff? any punk or metal?

In the past couple of years, we've had bands like Refused, Lightning Bolt, At the Drive In, Death From Above 1979, Mastodon, Baroness, Dillinger Escape Plan, Black Lips, OFF!, Atari Teenage Riot, Murder City Devils, etc...

I don't see or recognize any heavier bands this year, maybe I'm out of the loop. Any metal or punk bands? Even any experimental heavy bands that aren't necessarily metal (like Death Grips - loved em last year, Swans, etc...)?

Decendents, Social Distortion, Jello Biafra (from Dead Kennedys) and the Guantanamo School of Medicine, Dropkick Murphys and Trash Talk to name a few. I wouldn't necessarily classify Japandroids as typical punk or metal, but I would say they have a "heavier" sound.

Refused aren't pop punk, but they were pretty close to nu-metal

Yeah, I like them too. Already knew about em... wasn't really what I thought when I meant heavy though I guess they have a punk-ish beat, but thats about it.

This is the research. Isn't that what the forums are for? I'm making my research more efficient. I'm not wading through a hundred shitty bands, clicking through to their facebook or myspace page, then listening to multiple songs just to find a few I like. Sometimes I really wish Coachella would just list the genres or group bands separately like Fun Fun Fun Fest so people can discover new music they like, but skip out on stuff they would have zero chance of liking.

To other posters, thanks! Trash Talk and Ghost B.C. are great.

(already knew about social D, drop kick murphys, descendants... just not a huge fan)

    EDIT:

Just to elaborate a little bit... the boardies are not your fucking personal concierges. The purpose of the forum is to engage in discussions and to add comments and discuss topics that will add substance so that you can READ and enrich your Coachella experience.

If you want a personal concierge go get an platinum amex card, I think you can pay $450 a year a call any time you want and ask whatever the fuck you want.

Apparently the 'boardies' are for dickless jerkoffs to tell you what the 'boardies' are for. How very meta of these 'boardies.'

I saw Ghost open for Opeth. They are gimmicky and cliche, but they are def heavy.

I would give a bigger endorsement of Jello Biafra and The Guantanamo School of Medicine, but I am willing to bet he spends half his set talking about how much he doesn't like Obama instead of simply performing.

Maybe/hopefully, Lou Reed will play some VU proto-punk.

Concur. As I posted in the (my) Jello thread, I have big concerns that he gets 40 mins and spends 20 of it talking. That being said I CAN"T WAIT to see TGSOM again, they shred and do the DK songs perfect justice.

It's really nothing appealing. I don't care if their political opinions are on par with mine or not, I go to shows to watch bands perform, not to listen to them share their opinions on politics for half their allotted set times.

    Saturday - QOTSA / NAS / CHVRCHES / Temples / Mogwai / Warpaint / DARKSIDE / Ty Segall / Graveyard / Carbon Airways
    Sunday - Beck / Disclosure / Motorhead / Little Dragon / Trombone Shorty / Frank Turner / Bombino / Bad Manners / J. Roddy / Scuba
