    Default Cellphone Reception

Hey, does anybody know which cellular providers get the best reception at Coachella?

I've never had good results - TMobile, Verizon or Cingular.

With 60,000 users, we may as well be using Cricket.
At some point in time a man switches from "I'll have what he's having" to "I'll have what I'm having."

Reception is whack, of all the places to have bad reception right? Only at Coachella, I guess you will never be able to call your friend during that like one song because signal strength sucks.

You will always get a strong signal, just 95 out of every 100 times your call won't get through. The festival is in a big field in a rural part of the Coachella valley, so it is easy for the 1 or 2 nearby cell towers to get overloaded. Don't even bother making voice calls and instead just stick to text messages...although there will probably be a huge delay in when they actually reach the person you are trying to reach.

The best thing to do is just to establish meeting places for you and your friends. If there is an act you all want to see just make sure you meet somewhere at a specific time so that you can get a spot to see that act together. Even if you do split up you would be surprised how often you end up running into your friends. Every year people from my group go astray and I always run into them at some other random part of the festival.

seriously, it's not that you don't get reception, it's just the cell tower can't handle that many cell phones at the same time.

even if you text, it's a hit and miss because you can't predict when the txt will go through and when the receiving end gets it.

I've had 30 min delays before on some txt while others went through in 5-10mins

Jesus Christ. Why can't they temporarily import, like, three more cell towers or something.

I have Cingular and on the campsite I have never had a problem. Anyone who tries to use their phone inside the venue needs to be slapped anyway and I am glad they do not work.

I have a (drum roll) tracphone! I had no trouble in the venue or in the campsite. I sorta was surprised that everybody and their grandma had trouble with their cell service.
I don't have anything clever to say right now.

True. You can put these things on a trailer and bring them in for a weekend. It's very surprising that no effort is made to bump the capacity up for events like this.

As much as everyone complains about the service, I have never had a problem making a cell phone call inside the festival. Both times i went in 2004 and 2006 my friends and i were using cell phones to find each other, etc. I never had a single call that didnt go through on the first try. Same with receiving calls. I was using sprint, btw

It was either last year, or the year before...Sprint had an antenna van in a parking lot by the Polo Fields. I have Sprint and it turned out okay when I placed calls.

I brought walkie-talkies on 04' year and so many people had the same idea that whenever I turned them on, all I could hear is everyone else's messages. I couldn't even use them. It was a poor investment.

it will just suck period... but my friends who had cingular (i have verizon) had the reception that 'lasted the longest' (i could not get any of my calls to go through after about 5 pm the first day; theirs was ok until the morning of the 2nd day). however for whatever reason, i had better luck getting my text messages out (ie they got them, but couldn't send them).

I don't see how that pertains to this thread.
