Ferraro was alright. Definitely the weakest of the three though.

I was pretty bored by it. I had ZERO memory of his set the last time he opened for OPN, and I would imagine it'll be the same with this set in a week's time.

From what I could recognize it sounded like Ferraro did a lot of stuff from his release as Bebetunes; the first half didn't really have any drum programming, but he brought that in during the second half of the set.

Friday September 21st - Human Resources - Ensemble Economique, Yek Koo, Gul Bara

Anyone ever listened to any of these guys? If it wasn't the same night as Six Organs of Admittance I'd go just out of curiousity.

Grant Capes, former 1/2 owner of the Echo Curio and was in Sleepwalkers Local and Obscurer is forming a new group with my buddy Dave aka Endomentrium Cuntplow, called Cessation and they have a tape in the works for release soonish. Should be good stuff.

The Santa Ana Noise Fest (SANF 4) returns for its fourth installment to the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art at 117 North Sycamore, Santa Ana, CA 92701.

Festivities begin at 5:00 PM on
    Saturday December 8th, 2012.
    This event is FREE!

This celebration of all things experimental, improvised, distorted and loud offers an opportunity for interested parties to test their earplugs with performances from:

Brutal Poodle, Cold Grey Eye, Craig Sibley, +DOG+, Endometrium Cuntplow, Grizzly, Jesus Is Dead, phog masheeen, Six Mystic Points, Randy Jim, XSXCXEXBX and Yard Goat.

A unique feature of the Santa Ana Noise Fest is the “Noise Circle” at the end of the event. This offers an opportunity for all the performers to play together blending their unique approaches to sound production into a swirling vortex of sound.

The proximity of the date of the SANF 4 to the end of the Mayan Calendar prompted the promoters to suggest that the “Noise Circle” could be used in a ritual manner for “Opening a rift to the end of the world.”

Never heard of any of those acts, but now that I'm reading the posts above apparently Drinkey's friend is performing.

I would do anything to be in LA that weekend! This show is the night before. Love the flyer.

    The Cherry Point
    Hive Mind
    Damion Romero
    John Wiese

    Complex

edit: pretty sure The Cherry Point rarely/never plays shows. But he does make amazing harsh noise. So it's going to be interesting...

And speaking of PAN... Aaron Dilloway and Jason Lescalleet are playing LA on August 17th! That is really freaking exciting!

I sure wish I saw Dilloway at The Smell a couple years ago. Ever since I heard "Modern Jester"... Jared was right, we all blew it!

Yeah, this is through SASSAS, who always put on remarkable shows. Dilloway and Lescalleet are doing both a duo and solo sets I believe. With Wiese opening.

All right, this post is going to brush with broader strokes to incorporate more than just noise, but I hope it can serve as a rough guide to the "avant" scene in LA - whether it's noise, free improvisation, or something else.

Organizations and Venues to be Aware of

Human Resources - HR is a small space in Chinatown that puts on usually two to three music shows a month. They range from ambient (e.g. Tim Hecker), to noise (e.g. Rene Hell), to solo guitar (e.g. Daniel Bachman). It's almost always cash at the door and it's cheap, like $5-15. HR also houses installation and performance art. http://humanresourcesla.com/calendar-events/ The next show is Jackie O-Motherfucker and Tara Jane O'Neil on Feb 8th, and it promises to be a good one.

SASSAS - "The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound", or SASSAS for short, is a nonprofit group that puts on experimental music shows in LA, in various venues, but commonly in CFAER or The West Hollywood Library. Artists I've seen through SASSAS include MURAL, Rangda, William Basinski, and others. They're pretty bad about promoting their shows, but the best way to find out is through facebook https://www.facebook.com/sassasdotorg or their mailing list http://www.sassas.org/

The Wulf - The Wulf is another nonprofit. It's someone's apartment in a warehouse building, and shows are always free. I've only been once but it's fucking awesome. The next show I'm interested in seeing there is some just intonation pieces presented by Ulrich Krieger (who has done a bunch of stuff, but you guys may be interested to know that he played in Lou Reed's Metal Machine Trio). https://www.facebook.com/LAthewulf and http://www.thewulf.org/

Mata Noise - https://www.facebook.com/mata.noise - what it says, MATA is a noise venue, usually puts on cheap shows, donation at the door.

Complex - Complex is a tiny venue/craft beer bar hybrid in Glendale. They put on a lot of more experimental dance music it seems, but I've also seen stuff like Alberich there

Wasteland Music - This is a completely new endeavor focused on providing a space for modern composition - https://www.facebook.com/wstlndmsc

Betalevel - This is also for "new" music and I'm not familiar with it yet but I've seen listings for free improv and noise shows. The concerts are always free. https://www.facebook.com/betalevel

The Church on York - A new venue, they recently hosted Wolf Eyes and have had some really interesting bookings. Worth keeping an eye on. https://www.facebook.com/thechurchonyork

LA Noise Shows Facebook Group - a facebook group intended for people to post about upcoming noise shows. It's very useful. https://www.facebook.com/groups/losangelesnoiseshows/

LA Improv Scene - A facebook group for upcoming free improvisation concerts. https://www.facebook.com/groups/50676450086/

Open Gate Theatre - A series of concerts at CFAER for free jazz/free improv concerts. https://www.facebook.com/groups/217605238285662/

Fans and Friends of the LAFMS - This is for all things LAFMS, so it's usually not about shows in the LA, but when it is, you'll want to go! https://www.facebook.com/groups/lafms/

I know that I am missing things, but hopefully this is a good starter point for further discussion.
