I guess my question was more directed towards the fact they were playing any shows at all in CA right around coachella. I just remember in 09 I heard about that general 'rule'. I live in the bay and that even though it's not "in the area", the fact that someone could see one of the festival's biggest draws this year (for a lot of people) 2 days before it surprised me.

My "in the area" comment was also more directed towards the Santa Barbara show, but a ton of people go to coachella from SF and it's not really thattt far away (in my opinion) so I threw San Jose in there as well. I'm glad my friend gets to see them after not having the money for coachella, I just had the misconceived notion that they kept artists from playing a pretty big radius right around the festival in order to make it that much more exclusive.

I know last year, Two Door Cinema Club played in SF the Thursday before Coachella started (2 days before their performance at Coachella). Not sure what it was like in all prior years, but it definitely sounds like they've relaxed a bit.

Oh you most certainly won't be alone. I make a spreadsheet for me and everyone I travel with, then we know when we can meet up and if I'm not loving the band I chose to see, I know where to find my friends. Spreadsheets rock!

This year will be my first Coachella and I was wondering, how often are bands added to the lineup? Is it only if one is dropped? Or do certain "deals" just take longer and therefore don't make it with the original lineup announcement? If so, how often are they big name bands? Thanks.

As soon as the lineup comes out, many people begin speculating about getting lineup additions. Adds can happen for a number of reasons, and they are not a one-for-one replacement. They can happen at any level and at any time. Beck (2004) and Kanye West (2006) were very late adds with name appeal. Prince was announced very late in 2008. In 2007, the festival sold out quickly, and there were very few (if any) additions. The point is that you should not expect additions, but there may be a couple of changes between now and April.

i got a car camping pass - so I'm assuming some people will bring DJ setups for their campsite? total newb here. LETS FUCKING PARTY!

I'd be careful. I've heard a lot of stories about undercover cops "buying" and "selling".

Not to worry...you will be able to find more than a few parties in the campground going all night long.

Coming from Canada every year, I share your worry.

I would recommend obtaining your solutions before you go in. I have found solutions inside some years but I have found that I enjoyed Coachella to its fullest when I wasn't trying solve problems. People are more than willing to share inside, but I like full-out debauchery and you need your own supply for real fun.

I would find solutions in nearby Indio or Palm Springs a day or so before the festival.

If you are completely out of options, I would heavily tip a taxi driver and ask. I have had good luck with taxi drivers in different cities as a good source for local solutions to common problems...

One member of our group got all his booze taken at security last year. I guess it is possible but I would not count on it.

You just never know. Some security dudes are hardcore, some aren't really no way to know. I would say that 16 under-21ers is a big gamble trying to sneak that much booze in.
