I was also surprised they showed Loras and Renly outright... that was only hinted at in the books.

There were a bunch of new scenes that weren't in the books in that episode that were spectacular. Robert and Cersei's scene in particular was fantastic.
See, I never got the Renly/Loras vibe from the books. Maybe it was just because I was trying to process everything since it was my first time reading the series. I thought it was an interesting decision for the show though.
