We're about 90% though completely redoing our home office. Final pictures in a month or so. The latest task was to build a treadmill desk / workstation where we we can walk and work at the same time. We used a treadmill from craigslist, cheap monitor from Costco, extra counter-top leftover from our new desk, VGA splitter, and our existing wireless keyboard and mouse plus a dozen or so hours of effort. I'm exhausted, but super proud.

Apparently people think the portmanteau "wallternative" for alternative wall coverings to wallpaper is a clever and acceptable thing to litter the internet with.

Anyway, I was Googling wallpaper alternatives. I really like the idea of using pages from books as wallpaper. Has anyone done this or know of someone who has?

I have a friend who used book pages. I don't know that I like the look of it so much, but what I've typically done in that same vein is used steel cable, crimps, and aluminum tacks to create a cable system on the wall and then clipped things to it. It's sort of like a cross between photo-drying lines in a darkroom and a bulletin board, with the added bonus of being totally flexible to work with your space and eliminating tackholes or glue on the things you want to display. I also really like it for things that are interesting on both sides - I've got some old wwII newspaper pages hung up this way so that you can both look at them as wall decor and unclip them to actually physically read them if desired.

Also, there's nothing precluding you from using regular string and pushpins as long as they're strong enough.

Those are good ideas. Definitely good to play around with instead of being stuck with something I don't like. Did your friend use text pages? I was thinking maybe photo pages from older books. My mom is really into old timey shit and she might be willing to go along with me posting that kind of thing around the house, especially if it's temporary. She does a lot of collages (or used to) using primarily images pre-1950. I really oughta set up an Etsy shop for the stuff she's made, but she's just worried about copyright complications. I suggested she collage up the walls to cover the ugly spots where the wallpaper is gone and you can see drywall, but she shot that idea down.

Here's a picture from the article that suggested the idea. It's be kind of cool to do different rooms different themes.

She used photo pages, but they were sort of pulp-y so they darkened a lot from adhesive. I guess part of it is just an aversion on my part to the look of most collages as decor - they tend to look really "I do crafts"-y to me, which sort of enforces the misguided notion that everything homemade always looks homemade. I'm pretty sure you weren't talking about decoupaging my soapbox, though.

my shower head tried to attack me last night. the piece that holds the shower head is plastic and appears to be cracked, so it can no longer hold the shower head. does anyone like home depot or something sell just that piece that screws into the faucet and holds the shower head? is there a special name for this piece so i know what to ask for? i need to replace this tomorrow since i'm going into surgery and can't take baths. plus i'm broke as fuck and want to avoid buying a new shower head. thanks

I'll eat a few cookies if you're already making them for somebody else, but a full batch of something will probably go to waste.

    If yes: any allergies?

    Nope.

Is there a unifying color theme in your home? Post pics if you desire.

None whatsoever. It's pretty eclectic, mostly items collected because they're interesting and unique more than because they're visually appealing.

Is there a unifying theme to your personal style? If desired, may post pics or a hypothetical Polyvore outfit.

Almost themeless. I basically dress like a communist.

What was the last thing you made?

I started to build a hanging aluminum icosahedron out of some sheeting I had leftover from something else the other day, but I lost interest partway through. So, half a hanging aluminum icosahedron.

    What are your hobbies?

Writing, illustrating, metalsmithing, reading, sleeping, hoarding office supplies.

    Do you collect anything
    ?

I collect things that have stories, like steel pennies from the 1943 WWII copper shortage or interesting rock and gem specimens. Roman glass. Space race propaganda. Tiny wooden acorns carved by this one Bulgarian lady named Plamena. Gold thimbles. Books in Russian. Vintage Yugoslavian enamelware paella skillets.

What do you know. I used to collect those, too, when I was in my teens/early 20's. They're beautiful. I never knew if they were safe to cook with, so I used them as paint palettes. They all disappeared over the years and various moves. Too bad, or I'd send them to you.

Ha, that is wonderful. I've always been afraid to cook with them, too, but they make perfect small-project trays and dresser-top jewelry dishes.

Amenable to food gifts? Yes/no Yes, chocolate

    If yes: any allergies? No

Is there a unifying color theme in your home? Post pics if you desire. Neutral walls/upholstery, mostly mid-century-modern furniture, blond-to-med wood, bright pops of color in art/accessories

Is there a unifying theme to your personal style? If desired, may post pics or a hypothetical Polyvore outfit. Clean simple lines, minimal ornamentation, black, white, grey, green

What was the last thing you made? Dinner

What are your hobbies? outdoorsy things: camping, hiking, gazing upon the heavens, motorcycle riding, container gardening (condo, no yard anymore); also, starting DIY projects that I may or may not finish (but I swear I'll finish my secret santa gift)

Do you collect anything? No, not essentially, but I do love art (so I'd be thrilled to add some boardie work to my walls if art is my santa's thing, too)

Amenable to food gifts? Yes/no Yes! I especially like ginger, caramel and coconut (not necessarily together). White tea.

    If yes: any allergies? Citrus.

Is there a unifying color theme in your home? Post pics if you desire. No? Blues and reds? Cat hair. Mostly plain walls.

Is there a unifying theme to your personal style? If desired, may post pics or a hypothetical Polyvore outfit. Mismatched patterns. Or charcoals with contrasting colors.

What was the last thing you made? Painted color bottles for our wedding. I also made surprise jambalaya last night.

What are your hobbies? Seeing opera, theater and live music. Harassing cats.

Do you collect anything? Ticket stubs.

Shipping Note: UPS is the best way to send things to me, USPS will work as the Post Office is only a couple blocks away. FedEx is awful.

I may edit in more later as I think of it!

    Sure.

    If yes: any allergies?

    No, but I hate raisins.

Is there a unifying color theme in your home? Post pics if you desire.

Not yet, but I do have a fabulous painting from Amy (IFA) that is a burnt orange rust/red color that I love, once I move into my own place I think that will be the color theme.

Is there a unifying theme to your personal style? If desired, may post pics or a hypothetical Polyvore outfit.

Darker colors, browns, greens, black, deep red/orange.

What was the last thing you made?

I have been doing a little painting with the girls, I made wine glass charms once.

    What are your hobbies?

I have enjoyed painting, I am still trying to figure out other hobies. I do enjoy cooking and entertaining friends.

    Do you collect anything?

    Nope.
