Thread: A few questions concerning camping.

Default A few questions concerning camping.

Hi, I went to Coachella last year and it was a blast, however, we didn't camp, and I wasn't 18. This year, my cousin and I want to camp out, and have the means to, but he's 17. I heard that the ID checking isn't always consistent and some people get lucky and get in without being checked. We've heard of this place called Lake Cahuilla that sounds like a good alternative if we can't get in, but since we can't drive (we're getting a ride), we don't know if there are shuttles to/from the campground. Also, we'd be coming up on a Friday, is this a bad idea? I'm becoming frustrated and almost disenchanted with the whole idea. :/

There is a shuttle to Ralph's, last I heard, which is the grocery store about a mile from the fields. Based on the quote below I'd say pay someone to be that guy's dad when you first enter. Coming up on a Friday? Depends where you're coming from and what time on Friday. But keep in mind it might take a while to check in to the campground so be early if you want to see the 12-2pmish bands.

Can I bring the family to camp?

All campground attendees must be 18 years of age or older with ID or if under 18, be accompanied by legal parent or guardian. Every camper must have their own festival ticket.

I thought of that, most people at Coach seem to be pretty laid back about that kind of stuff. We'd be coming out of the Antelope Valley or LA for that matter. Most of the bands we would want to see are playing on Saturday and late Friday night, so I don't have to worry about that at least.

Well I guess it's not a problem if you're that close and don't care much, but I should point out that there are always (as in every day of every year) bands worth seeing throughout most of the day. To me that's what makes $300 a good deal as opposed to a ripoff.

It always seems like the bands near the bottom of the list like As Tall as Lions or Yeasayer will probably be playing during the day or early evening, when I won't be there. The only reason I didn't seriously consider a surrogate dad for my cousin is because I thought there might be some way of disproving it(?).

Where a band is placed on the lineup does not indicate when they will play. Sometime scheduling makes it so that you could have the mainstage headliner playing at the end of the night and on the 4 other stages have bands closing and those bands could all be at the bottom of the lineup.

My cousin is taller and looks older than me, maybe there'd be a way to look even less conspicuous?

Another question: if I bought the camping site would he be able to just come and join me as a "friend"? It says somewhere in the guidelines that you can have anyone with a ticket come into the camping area. Or would he have to "check in" to sleep there?

Have you emailed Coachella to clarify the rules? As far as I can tell from the wording they are gonna be pretty lax with letting people into the campground but who knows, maybe they're checking ID's at the gate like they say they will.

So they may check id's every time somebody enters the campground?

The rules are clear, camping is 18+. And yes, they may check ID cards ever time somebody enters.

They are likely to check everyone that looks young entering from the street, at least Thursday and Friday.

It is unlikely, however, that they will be checking everybody's ID each time they enter the camping area from the festival grounds; that would take forever.

They may just check folks that don't have the beer garden wristbands - which are 21+, of course - but even then that'd be a ton of people and would slow things down a lot. I, of course, have no idea because I don't work for GV.

If your cousin looks clearly over 18 you might not run into any problems, but I, personally, would want to have a backup option if I got caught.

Then don't look at this thread Steve.

Mindro, i have a couple friends camping with me who are 17 and won't be turning 18 till after the festival. One of em found that there is a legal document stating that a minor can enter the campgrounds with a "legal guardian" that his/her parents can sign and get notarized. Then they will let ur cousin in. I'm only 18 and i'm gunna be their guardian haha

That is not how legal guardianship works. That is clearly not the intent of the rules as set by Goldenvoice.

Whatever is considered legal in an actual COURT OF LAW. I would recommend consulting an attorney on what it takes to really become a minor's legal guardian.

get it in writing and notarized and you will be fine....

the only time it will become a issue is if he does something stupid, then you will have to show you are his guardian or else he is supposed to be escorted out and put into custody until a legal guardian with id shows up...

people over 18 are not automatically a legal guardian of someone under 18.

You kids should stop screwin around. The age of legal guardianship in CA is at least 25 if I remember correctly. You're screwin around too much.

in another post, PF said that under 18 will have different wristbands.

Is it possible for my brother who is 17 (almost 18 by time of event) to camp with me and my friends? We are all 21+ years old (other than my brother described) and are planning to camp. Can I act as a legal guardian for my brother? And, if there are any steps needed to assure there are no problems can you please describe?

Thanks in advance. Really appreciate any help.

    Thanks, certainly will.

Just thinking, surely if I get a legitimate temporary guardian form notarized then it will work right?
