    Default Deerhunter

Would someone please explain this shit to me?

This is the second time I've tried to "get" Deerhunter, and I think I'm failing even worse this time around. It sounds like a bunch of kids cleaned out the garage and used all the junk they could find to put some tracks together on Daddy's Macbook.

I realize that all came off really arrogant... but honestly, I do not get it, and I know they have a lot of fans. How high am I supposed to be to enjoy this? Like... on a measure between Kottonmouth Kings and Cypress Hill... wait. I have no idea what Kottonmouth Kings would be.

There's already a deerhunter thread. If you don't like them, you don't like them. Don't waste your time trying to "get" it.

Well, no... I didn't get it on the first listen either. I recommend you keep going for it.

Sorry about the thread - I couldn't find it because it was called "The Deerhunter Thread". Silly, I know.

But... with all due respect, if folks followed the approach you're advocating, we'd listen to a lot of music one time and move on. The first time I listened to Jeff Buckley, I thought he was a pretentious douche bag... only after reading/hearing more about him did I realize I had misinterpreted his music entirely. The first time I listened to The Cult, I was so offput by Ian Astbury's voice, I couldn't imagine listening again.

Oh, and thanks for the Youtube clip... that seems a lot more cohesive than the album I'm listing to ("Deerhunter").

Tom--I was under the impression you'd listened to them a few times and that you were just here to bitch. My advice: scrap the Deerhunter album. Give Microcastle a try, it's much more accessible, and their sound is far more developed.

"Never Stops" and "Nothing Ever Happened" especially.

the album "Deerhunter" was earlier on in their career. They hadn't settled on a sound, yet. It was self-released, and there's zero chance that they'll ever play any of their material from it again. "Adorno" is the only song from it that I've seen them play live, so just scrap listening to it, and pretend it didn't happen.

Here's the "hit" from their last tour that made people yell loudly:

    "Never Stops" from Microcastle

But this was the "single", I guess:
    "Agoraphobia" from Microcastle

Here's my favorite song put together with a fan-edit of Dawn of the Dead:
"Fluorescent Grey" from the EP of the same name

Here's one of their newer songs (though admittedly, they'll probably play a lot of new-newer songs at Coachella)
"Rainwater Cassette Exchange" from the EP of the same name, as well

And here's a select song from the their album that gained them notice in the world of media:
    "Octet" from Cryptograms
    *based upon tedious fact checking.

This is definitely my favorite Deerhunter song. The riff sorta reminds me of 60's soul music. Awesome lyrics too.

This is your problem. I'm a self-professed Deerhunter fanatic and i have NEVER listened to that album.

"Cryptograms" is my recommendation. I listened to that and immediately loved it, it's one of my most cherished albums I own (because the vinyl comes with the Fluorescent Grey EP too)

But a lot of people (myself included) love Microcastle. Maybe you should start there. But if you're a true Flaming Lips fan (this is coming from somebody who lives down the road from Wayne) you should listen to Cryptograms / Fluorescent Grey EP and make up your own mind.

just watch their set and you won't be disappointed. their live shows are much better than their albums...but i think they are a great studio band as well.

I straight up hated Deerhunter for like a year the first time I heard them. But one day, it just clicked. I can't explain it.

Thanks for all the responses. I generally grab the latest album by an artist I want to check out... I messed up and accidentally got some way earlier music.

I suppose this is the risk you run when you try to jam 30 new bands into a very short period of time - you make mistakes and lose some along the way. I'll give Microcastle and Cryptograms a try, and maybe I'll turn around.

I hate that fucking band... they opened for Mewithoutyou and someone texted me saying Deerhunter was opening. I then went online where the same typo was posted on the official Glasshouse website. It was really weird.

Cryptograms is good, gotta hear Strange Lights. My favs off the other albums have to be Focus Group and Slow Swords. Everything is catchy, those songs are charged with emotion....even if it is depression.

Also Atlas Sound is wonderful, an obvious choice.
