In case anyone had the same problem as I, or simply wants it flat-out, here is the link to DL the SBTRKT EM: http://www.fileserve.com/file/RdGFMWF

(learned something....use "mp3" instead of "mediafire" for EM searches)

Very chill house, without the negative connotations associated with 'chill.' Also, there are some good vocals/lyrics throughout as well.

I've dubbed this music as Deep Disco Minimal Tech House, at least that's how it sounds to me. Love the essential mix! Really digging this style that people are pushing these days, great smooth music.

Slow house is a legitimate term. It's not deep house at all.

Fair enough... as you are far more an expert on the terms and definitions of such.

    Please educate me.

I'm no expert on what specifically differentiates slow house from some from of the other variations, Ross might be able to lend more insight into that. I just know that I've seen the term "slow house" and even "melodic slow house" used in the industry to describe what Art Department and others of that ilk are putting out there.

From the intro to the essential mix I would say it's safe to say that Art Department themselves feel they just spin house music.

understood... however the term Deep House is defined as 'A slower variant of house (around 120 BPM) with warm sometimes hypnotic melodies.' 'The use of vocals became more common in deep house than in many other forms of house music. Sonic qualities include soulful vocals, slow and concentrated dissonant melodies, smooth, stylish, and chic demeanor. Deep house music rarely reaches a climax, but lingers on as a comfortable relaxing sound, with or without vocals.'

so is Deep House slower than Slow House....? Mind you this is a legitimate question, I'm not looking to antagonize or pick any kind of fight.

    Isn't "ilk" a negative adjective?

^ I've never known it to be.

I'm not an authority on whether or not deep house is slower than slow house or vice-versa...Ross? Though upon reflection, I suppose much of Art Department's production could fall under the categorization you provided for deep house.

The first google hit for "slow house," that actually relates to music, is now this thread.

I'd considered them deep house but I'm not into overcategorizing electronic music. That said, I like the term "slow house" because it makes me think of SLOW BOATS.

Truth be told, I haven't given the EM a proper listen. My comment was intended as a general categorization of the Art Department sound. I've seen/heard it alternatively described as slo-mo house, future pop, underground pop, narco/drug house (the last term muddies the waters considerably as it has a wholly separate and definitive connotation/lineage).

Some of these terms appear in bonefied critical commentary, others merely bandied about among avid listeners.

In my mind, the distinguishing feature of this now not-so-nascent sound is the prominence of the male vocal. In listening to the production work and DJ sets of Wolf + Lamb, Life and Death, Crosstown Rebels, etc. artists, this is what jumps out. Along with a sense that the music perfectly captures the weirdness of the witching hours that append a long night on the dance floor in a small, dark room. Plenty of other genres play around w/ lower BPM's.

Then again, its all really just house music in the end. Perhaps its best to leave it at that.
