Alright, I don't necessarily think that INXS would be the best choice but they did, like Depeche Mode, play (and I think sell out) the Rose Bowl about this time (let's think of INXS '90 as like The Killers '09--great undercard, but head-scratch headliner). New Order had just released "Fine Time," their attempt to keep current with the burgeoning acid house scene. The Chili Peppers were just on the verge of releasing "Blood Sugar...," which brought them huge fame but they weren't quite there yet. Morrissey had recently gone solo and already released a B-sides collection. Jean-Michel Jarre took the Coachella Stage after INXS to present his synth-extravaganza, complete with his laser harp. 808 State was dominating the dancefloor with "Cubik" and 'acid house' and 'raves' were just about take over urban America. As usual, Coachella was hip to the trends and booked the top dance acts, such as Inner City, S'Express, the Shamen, and Frankie Knuckles to blow out the Sahara Tent, then in its first year. Big Audio Dynamite cancels due to conflicts within the band; Mick Jones reschedules as BAD II, but they fail badly. And, Bowie finally plays Coachella, but only with his unmemorable band Tin Machine. Nice design and all, but here's my complaint with a lot of these posters and really what I'm responding to is more Shotglass saying "and the winner is" than your poster specifically:

I'm tired of seeing the same posters featuring the biggest fucking headliners of their year.

This may seem like a stupid criticism to a lot of you, but frankly I find this shit intensely unimaginative. You have literally the three biggest fucking headliners from the decade all playing Coachella. It shows absolutely no creativity to pick a year and then focus on the absolute biggest acts of that year to headline it, not to mention the fact that it's absurdly unrealistic. When has Coachella ever had three headliners who could all sell out 40,000 capacity venues on every day? It makes no sense. Why would they bother coming to play a festival? Did Zeppelin ever play a festival during they heyday? Floyd? No. Because they could sell the shit on their own.

After performing Blood on the Tracks the Band would join Dylan to do some Basement Tapes songs.

    BTW

For those doing research, and excellent source outside of the same websites everyone seems to be going to is Scott Schinder's Alt-Rock-A-Rama book. It's a little dated, but that kinda helps it for this contest.

You'll prolly learn something as well.

    Here's my stab at 1992:

Edited damn near the whole lineup; very realistic now.
Eliminated the abundance of huge names, rearranged many, and added a variety of musicians- some one hit wonders, + a few which are not too popular in '92, but have since become to be very well known...

Velvet Underground headlining anything just makes me want to fucking punch people, especially over Nirvana when they were the hottest commodity in rock that year. Pixies were never, ever popular enough to subheadline until they'd been broken up for a decade. Iggy and the Stooges didn't reform until 2003.

The Velvet Underground are legends, DEFINATELY headliners, to headline this year would be a huge draw...Nirvana are most certainly the biggest rock act this year - they could headline, or they could subheadline under Rock 'N Roll legends....to say the Pixies weren't popular enough to subheadline until a decade after their break up makes no sense, they headlined Reading in 1990 and it is still a highly acclaimed show...Iggy and the Stooges didnt reunite until 2003, but this is Coachella 1992; a huge festival within such an era that could've definately brought this band together for a reunion gig.

people seem to forget that Woodstock wasn't the only festival the summer 0f '69, just the most infamous due to the news coverage of the state highways being shut down, it mistakenly being called a free concert, thus the crowds.. and the later legends of course..

although Led Zeppelin DID have the dates available in April '72, so ya never know.. (although i think it's more realistic than Randy says, since in '72 they were playing venues like the Memorial Coliseum in Portland Oregon, the Long Beach Arena, The Forum in L.A., the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium, Tucson Community Center, & the Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino.. i wouldn't exactly say they were selling out 60,000 person venues, although they were filling (a couple) larger venues outside the U.S...

they played one or two stadiums in '73, but didn't really start headlining them until '75

I have to disagree with you.

VU could headline over Nirvana, sure Nirvana was selling tons recods, but VU has always carried a godlike status. So them headlining over a "new" band that happens to be #1 on the charts isn't that far off at all.

Pixies were very popular in 1990. I thought you were JUST complaining about to many BIG names in the top lines of posters?

The Stooges were a band before 1990 - thus - in this imaginary world, a reunion could have happened. I thought you read/knew the rules of this.

Here are both my 1983 posters - the original, and the one I reworked to be more "old-school". Same acts, but totally different look. I'm trying to age it, but it's tough to figure that part out.

ignore randy, he likes to bitch far more than he likes to contribute..

as far as Nirvana, they were one of those rare integrity bands that would probably refuse to headline over an act like Velvet Underground.. hell, they made that stand for Sonic Youth and several others who were certainly not the #1 hottest commodity that year..

It's 1986, Elvis Costello is one of the first ever inductees into the Rock & Roll hall of fame. The Monkees have reunited and are touring. A-Ha wins a record 8 MTV music video awards, and Black Flag disbands later in the year making Coachella one of their last shows.
