Bob Dylan, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, and The Beach Boys (at the very least) were all headliners. Your poster is fucking ridiculous.

People--don't stack your posters with every well known artist from that year/era.

    10/18-19: Treasure Island Music Festival
    10/22: Roman Flugel @ f8
    10/25: Moodymann @ PW
11/20: The Drive by Truckers, Sturgill Simpson @ The Fillmore

Yeah that one is way too top heavy, and not very realistic lineup wise.

Nothing that you have said there actually resembles anything useful. Maybe if you backed up your criticism by actually stating how you would make it better would give some redeeming quality to your words. You should probably use the time you spend knocking everyones poster to fix the design of your own which looks like you shit on a piece of paper and called it a poster.

You can't stack your poster full of headliners...you get one tops for each day....it's really unoriginal to just name a bunch of big names from back in the day and throw em on a poster...makes people think very little effort or thought was put into the lineup.

exactly- ill put it kind and constructive.

your poster is wayy too stacked with insanely popular musicians; you also dont have nearly enough acts.

i immediately recognized nearly every act on that lineup - thus, unrealistic -

It's hard to go back in time and try to remember which acts would have been big enough. I tried thinking of acts I liked and realized I liked a lot of shitty music back then.

Hmm- it has occurred to me that since alot of people are stacking their lineups- they think just as I did that the bands are arranged by popularity. Since popularity of bands is obviously not the issue then there has got to be some sort of criteria that Coachella overall uses to make their lineups realistic. Since we are all going into this rather blindly- I think another winner would be at least helpful to show as an example from all the entries of that year instead of just showing Menik's poster as the clear winner without anything to compare it against.

    update: looked into new wave
14% of teenagers answering a December 1982 Gallup Poll rated New Wave music as their favorite genre, making it the third most popular genre. New Wave had its greatest popularity on the West Coast.

i dont know what you were talking about there

Just make sure you don't put anyone on there these posters don't like, or you might get ripped for that too. So... in short, become a mind-reader before you post, and you should be alright.

To be fair, the critical posts may come from different sources... one will say "too many of the same headliners" while another says "too many big names", and if you go more obscure, you'll get "your lineup sucks."

My advice is to do your research and pick some lower tier acts that you'd ONLY know if you were a music fan in that era. There are websites with the hottest blues, country, and dj acts, popular acts can be tracked by the Grammys or record sales... and alt rock and indie acts are easy, since the same indie rock acts pop up in the "Rumors" sections here constantly.

If you're not willing to research when Tupac was in jail, when Jimi or Marley died, or when an album was released.... or if you're not willing to spend many hours working on Photoshop/Gimp skills... you probably won't be in real consideration. Both are factors.

*Redacted* I just realized you could click on the second post on the first page to keep up with the individual entries. Nice job! That would be immensely helpful for keeping an eye on the competition without getting bogged down in chat-battle.

Oh I'm sorry. What you meant to say is not that you wanted constructive criticism, but that you wanted somebody to hold you by the hand and walk you through exactly how to fix your fuckups. You should have said so.

that's super cool. the first day kinda pales in comparison to the next two, in size and quality
no coachella for me this year. lineup is too weak to fly coast to coast.

I take suggestions a lot better when you get to the fucking point instead of prefacing your stupid comments with worthless posts like this. What rearranging, praytell?

Plus I dunno about that. I'd give at least four of my testicles to have seen Jefferson Airplane.

No I actually just wanted some advice I could. FYI, "your poster is fucking ridiculous" is not helpful in any shape or form. Now, I could tell you that you are a fucking asshole, but if I don't tell you what you should do about it, like go jump off a cliff or stab yourself in the face with a pitchfork, then it really isn't much help now is it..

How is me telling you that you have six bands on there that are headliners who aren't headlining not helpful enough? I'm sorry, allow me to rephrase it:

Excuse me, Mr. Timelessfilms, I happened to notice that for some reason you have 9 of the biggest bands of the entire decade all playing your festival. Might I suggest that this is rather unrealistic and that your billing "Better Than Woodstock," while accurate, also reflects how completely improbable and uncreative your choices are. To wit, I recommend that you put a little more effort into it and try and conceive of an actually feasible lineup in which the subheadliners are not one of the nine biggest bands of the decade. There is a thing called the internet you can search on to help you figure out how popular bands were the year of your festival. You should use it to determine where these acts belong relative to the other acts.

For some advice/links, check this post.

It has links to some of the resources I used... .Wikipedia, the Grammy/AMA websites, some blues and punk or whatever. Plus, a link to download Gimp, if you lack the software to get this done.

This contest should be about fun more than anything else, since few people have the time, talent, and knowledge to create what they need to do to win. I've done a few with fun as the goal, and it's working out pretty well. Learning some of these bands, the way they interconnect, and all that... fun. If you end up winning, that's even more fun!
