    watch your posture guys

just a friendly reminder as everyone is furiously designing/complaining away. in the excitement of this enthralling contest you might have be unaware of the ridiculous way your body has contorted itself in your chair.

I have been looking through tons of posts and have come up with a list of what I think is the best and worst so far. This just my opinion. Don't get upset. The best years are: 1971 (2 strong designs) 1982 (3 strong designs) 1983 (3 strong designs) and 1986 (4 strong designs). Years to consider if you are going to do one (or another) 1972, 1989, 1994, 1996, 1998, not because of quantity but because of mediocre quality. All other years are good with at least one good or really good design. Don't even think about 1992. If you are wondering, I only have one in 1986 on the don't bother list... so i am being fair and not saying don't do my year. I love the competition.

These are what I would say are the best. Again just my opinion. What are yours? BTW, I am not including mine because it would be too obvious if I chose my own (although I think I have some good ones too). Anyway... Top 5in order. Sorry I don't know whose is whose at this time but if one is yours; respect.

my 1981 poster isn't on the list of posters.
no coachella for me this year. lineup is too weak to fly coast to coast.

    1998 Submission (weeklymix):

With the exception of a few acts that had an album out in 1996 (DJ Shadow, that might actually be it), every other act could have been promoting an album or compilation (eg: Phil Collins' Greatest Hits '97) that came out in early 1998 or 1997.

Note: Faith No More's last show in 1998 was in Lisbon two weeks prior. I'm assuming it's not that much of a stretch that they did their final show of the Album of the Year tour in their home state on a big stage.

Edit: The awkward moment of the weekend goes to Natalie Merchant running into 10,000 Maniacs.

Any suggestions are welcome I suppose...

You have Fatboy Slim WAY too low on Sunday. This is 1998, around the time EDM (and more specifically the whole big-beat thing) was in full force in the US, and Fatboy was one of the most prominent artists of the genre and time.

He was huge in the UK but check the release date of his singles. He probably needs to be a bit higher but certainly not way way up.

    Edit:

Rockafeller Skank was his first single in the UK higher than #39 (granted it was top 10) but it wasn't until June of 1998. He does need to be moved up at least one line though so thanks for the help. This also made me realize Modest Mouse is a bit too high for 1998. I can probably just switch their positions.

yeah I see you're right. If it was a year or two later, he'd probably be 2nd line because he won a few MTV awards in 99.

it's a cool lineup though, I have Fatboy on my 98 lineup as well.

Aw well I guess I'll start looking at some of the 80s submissions and see if I can compete.

I like this (even if Phil Collins is on it - ick), but did 10,000 Maniacs ever perform without Natalie Merchant? If yes, you just taught me something! Good job, tho!

Yes, when she left they got a new lead singer and still performed under the 10,000 Maniacs name. It didn't work.

one thing I have noticed, in a lot of you guys posters I recognize every single name. I can not say that about the real posters of the last 10 years. just a thought.

1993 Merchant left right after they played Clinton's inaugural ball I think, 1997 was their first (and last) record since Merchant left under the name 10,000 Maniacs. There was some legal dispute from 1993-1997 as to who had the rights to that band name so for a while the band members were in a group that was the name of all their first names "John, Mary, etc"

doesn't it only matter if you would've known them back in the year the poster is supposed to be in. i mean its hard to try and put yourself back in a year like 1983 and know what bands would've been highly known at the time. of course everyone should know the big names you are referring to by now- they have stood the test of time..

Please explain how you go about not recognizing a band that has existed for almost over 10, 20, 30 years?

Lots of bands -- even good ones -- that existed 10, 20, 30 years ago have since disappeared into an abyss. The great posters on here, and there are many, recover bands that have fallen into that abyss. Good design in nice, but, for me, the best faux posters are those that have a healthy dose of those 'once here, now forgotten' bands on the lineup.

Alright I'm going to tweak my lineup. More bands. A little more obscure at the bottom line. I can do this.

Edit: Fixed. More bands, some that even died out nearly after that Coachella.

could these bands be so obscure that there isn't even a recorded history of their existence. I mean, the band I was in 12 years ago was unbelievable but no one heard of them. if they were put on the poster would it make a difference?

After looking at that poster weeklymix, I'd honestly say it's better than my 98.

Great poster and lineup. My only thought is that Green Day were really not at the height of their career in 1998 (whatever that means). they were barely selling out venues like The Riv in Chicago which hold only 2500 people and "Warning" really wasn't doing that well in sales. Just some constructive criticism. Good job though.

Nimrod came out in October of 1997. It went double platinum. Headliner.
