no coachella for me this year. lineup is too weak to fly coast to coast.
Hmm sounds interesting I might make one...
Lets go back to 1993!!

What date is judging going to happen? It almost seems like when you see one you like its a winner... well only one winner so far right? But had anyone else joined the competition? Or is it crank it out fast and hope no one catches the judges eyes before you finish the poster? Also, do you take into account that most posters before 1998 aren't going to created digitally? Or is it just whatever looks cool as long as the bands are relevant? These are many questions, but it will determine how I go about doing this. THanks!

lack the lineup ideas. and possibly lack the effort.
So we should keep the basic background on these Erik? For sure keep the header, mountains and whatnot? Do you think GV would appreciate it more?

Here's my 1972 entry. I didn't use the stock background, instead opting for a shot of the Argentine desert I took my own self. I didn't want to end up with Zeppelin (since they were on the '77 poster), but they fit really well. Floyd I chose because they first played Dark Side of the Moon live in early '72, so I figured the desert would be a perfect place to kill that beast and conquer America.
There are two versions... the old newsprint retro faded version, and the full color fancypants version. Enjoy!

Ooh look Nintendo clouds.
Ah Coachella 1987, Can't wait to go to this, even though I have no idea what this new stuff called "house music" is all about, it's all so very new.
I'm kinda disappointed Husker Du broke up this year, I'm pretty sure they'd played this in 1984. Rumor has it that Joan Jett caught the flu so she had to cancel.
Wonder how many pegged jeans will be at the festival?

Hahah! I resisted the urge to add David Bowie to the '72 fest... but let's face it, he could headline just about any year in that range.
Gene Loves Jezebel did tour with Billy Idol around 1988 or so. Maybe '90... but how did they get a spot over Ministry?! Blasphemy! I think LL Cool J should probably rank a bit higher, but nice to see The Cult in the mix. I'd go to that Coachella!
Yeah Bowie could headline any year. I figured this would be his big Glass Spider thing, which in the end didn't work, but he'd probably try it out one more time.
Also keep in mind this is pre-Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste Ministry. So apart from Everyday is Like Halloween, they might have only had the 12" of Stigmata at this time. Neither of those had the crossover appeal of Desire. Gene Loves Jezebel were indeed coming off the Echo that year. The Billy Idol tour was 1988, the two bands met at the 1987 Coachella (hehe)
LL Cool J's big hit up till then was Going Back to Cali. So long before the Mama Said Knock You Out multi platinum stuff.

I'll probably edit this post if I reconsider my design:

Well done sir. A few Madonna-esque artists on day 3, but I'd go to that festival! I almost did the Battlezone grid myself but it was a bit too early for 1987, so I have Nintendo clouds, and you have an Atari landscape. Spot On!
The only thing I'd say that I'd think Fleetwood Mac might actually headline over Bowie that year. Only because Bowie was alienating some fans with his recent Germany trilogy... and Rumors was about as big as a record that has ever been. But as we said before Bowie could headline any year since 75 with ease.
Great call on Earth Wind and Fire and Orange Juice.

There's always a big chunk of stuff that people will see as filler on the lineup. Some people were not excited for Amy Winehouse, but she would have had a huge crowd last year. Fleetwood Mac, Air Supply, etc. They would be necessary to draw the crowds to have made these tickets affordable.
Also Fleetwood Mac were at the end of their Tusk tour, and Bowie refused to play unless he was granted headliner status. A couple years later, Fleetwood Mac would headline the US Festival in 1982. Bowie headlined in 1983 (for $1 million back then) with Stevie Nicks opening. Bowie was booked to headline before "Let's Dance" brought the fans back, so even as the whole Germany trilogy was wrapping up, he was real viable headliner.
Coachella ponied up and got both to play, with Fleetwood Mac opening, because they had to drive up to San Francisco the next day, so they went on earlier.

I fail ... delete delete!
At any rate, thanks GV for this chance and for the very generous prizes.
I heard they are going to announce Coachella 1982 later today?

Mad respect to you guys that do this every year in Erik's contest. That was fucking hard. 1985 was not a great year for music. Bruce Springsteen and Tina Turner were large and in charge.
Edited to add something (no change to lineup)

excellent work so far!
I might be willing to help with lineup ideas.
Uhm, not sure exactly what date the polo fields came to be, but some of those really old posters should be smack dab in the middle of a date palm orchard.
Holy shit - I'm in.
I want to make at least 2 posters.
And, a few questions:
1) There can be multiple people doing the same year, correct?
2) About how many winners will be selected? I guess this depends on how many entries are submitted
well fuck. I spent all morning working on a 1985 line up. Looks like that will be a double up. And two of my headliners were the same.
