I hate Apple's closed system, so I am looking forward to HP/Palm's Slate, which is dumping the original Win7 variant for WebOS. Sure, not as many apps now, but I like the ones they have and HP can push this to a lot of people, meaning more new developers, and more developers of interesting successful apps porting them to WebOS.

Out of curiosity, how do you lug it around? Do you just hold it in your hand or do you have some kind of, I dunno, shoulder strap or something? I have yet to see one in person and wonder how people get around with them since you presumably can't just stick it in your pocket like a phone.

Loving this thing. Work paid for it; wouldn't have bought it myself. Loads of fun though.

If your primary purpose is for reading, wait and get the Kindle.

Gosh, 6 months later, I can fit it in my purse. I'm a small person and hate large bags, so it fits in a medium bag. Or it fits in a back pack easily. It's really lite.

The 2nd gen should be here soon-ish and most likely with a camera for video calls.

If you are on the comp a lot while in bed, on the sofa or in a chair you will love it. I read a lot of news and do a lot of research, with the iPad I can work comfortably. I only got mine because my partner bought it for me when they first came out. Now I'm hooked and might regift this to my niece when the new one comes out.

Btw I had to take my vehicle to the stealership to get a part fixed under warranty and I brought my iPad with me. 5 hours of waiting isn't bad when there's free wifi and your iPads loaded with movies. I was watching the hangover laughing my ass off.

I don't know if there's a better thread for this - really interesting article in local paper about Best Buy's positioning against Apple. Sort of an analysis of the future of the personal electronics market. I find this fascinating despite never having owned an Apple product personally.

So for Christmas, my work just bought everyone the brand new 32GB iPad Mini. I wasn't expecting it at all, but thought it was pretty cool. With that being said... I have never even entertained the idea of buying an iPad, so I have no idea what to do with it. Basically, I am trying to decide if I should keep it, or just flip it on eBay.

Who here has an iPad, and what do you use it for? Part of me wants to keep it... I just want to find the right reason. I recently got my first Mac Laptop and have just started to get into music production, and I have read that iPads make music production a lot easier as you can use it as an extra monitor, a midi controller, a session mixer, and more. That is pretty cool. I don't have an iPhone, so Siri is also an attractive feature to me.

Anyways, anyone who has one and enjoys it, try selling it to me. Or, conversely, if you owned an iPad and found it useless, let me know too. I wouldn't mind having the money in my pocket instead. Thanks for the help guys!

Sell it and get a full sized iPad. Mini is too small and mostly only good for reading books in my opinion. i mostly use mine for surfin the net, or playing chess, or reading. Sometimes its easier than dealing with a laptop, but some websites dont work as well. there are a million other fun apps though. And yes, many music related ones, although I don't know which ones are good.

It's honestly not worth the trouble of me to exchange it. And from what I have read, the iPad mini is a step up in terms specs on the iPad 2. Thanks for the suggestion though.

As for apps and stuff... is it possible to torrent/download apps for free without jailbreaking your iPad? And what about the eReader function. Can I torrent books for free? Or does it have to be jailbroken for books too?

Not really. Doesn't work like that (the apps). Not sure about jailbreaking, but its not worth it.

There are tons of good free apps, and you could also, I dunno, pay for for a few as well.

Between apples iBooks app and Amazons Kindle app, they both can read/display all the different e book file formats, even PDFs.
So, if you download a torrent, you can synch the files in iTunes, or open it as attachment in an email, and it will ask which app you want it to open to.

Even if all you end up using it for is light browsing/email, you'll love it. It's the perfect shitter device.

And you said your doing some music production.
The Garage Band app is great for working out ideas and such. It's a steal for only $4.99.
And also tons of free instrument apps.

    /cool story bro

Thanks, Hunter. I haven't downloaded the garage band app yet, but I plan on doing that. I think I am also going to grab TouchAble, the remote Ableton controller.

Does anyone use their iPad as a second monitor? If so, how so? It seems wireless is the only way to do it with an iPad, but they closest thing I can find to a reliable app for that is AirDisplay, and people seem to be 50/50 on whether it works or not. Are there any other options?
