Thread: Fuji Rock Festival 2010

Oooh, that would be sweet. Thanks for the info. I'm guessing that with Splendour being expanded to three days, there will be a little more overlap between the two festivals this year.

Of course, it could just as easily be Summer Sonic instead of Fuji. I get the feeling I'll end up going to that one too, all the while bitching and moaning about how the festival lacks a "vibe." Pavement will probably be there, but then again so will Sum 41.

I'm eyeing the Lollapalooza rumors with a lot of interest here, since none of those bands will be playing Summer Sonic, which of course increases their Fuji Rock chances.

I can't see Lady Gaga playing Fuji. Green Day? Maybe, but I'm guessing no. The Strokes? Well they did headline in 2006. Arcade Fire? Man, that would be a pretty big win. I'm going to go ahead and assume that Dirty Projectors and the xx will be there.

So my Fuji Rock headliner prediction looks like this:

    Friday: Rage Against the Machine
    Saturday: The Strokes
    Sunday: Massive Attack

Speaking of Massive Attack, the Japanese release of their excellent new album contains a remix done by Yukihiro Takahashi and Ryuichi Sakamoto as a bonus track (I guess Haruomi Hosono was busy or something). Man, how awesome would it be for the Sunday Green Stage to go YMO -> Massive Attack? Yes, I'm just rambling.

Will Primal Scream be performing a Screamadelica set at Fuji?

    http://www.nme.com/news/primal-scream/49796

Despite my bitching about the band, i'll probably end up seeing that if it happens. Of course, no true Fujirocker will pass up on a chance to crack a Primal Scream joke, so I'm going to predict that it'll be a Screamadelica set on Friday, a Give Out But Don't Give Up set on Saturday, and an XTRMNTR set on Sunday.

The weather last year wasn't that bad on Saturday and Sunday. A little rain here and there, but nothing intolerable.
That's very true. The problem was that it was so torrential on Friday that it mucked up things for the rest of the weekend. The area off the asphalt of the Green Stage was ruined for the whole Fest.

How did you manage that...Security was checking bags pretty rigorously at the gate.
Same as what Blue Stapler said -- clear liquor in water bottles will do the trick. We each come in with a bottle of vodka and fill one plastic water bottle each per day.

I'm eyeing the Lollapalooza rumors with a lot of interest here, since none of those bands will be playing Summer Sonic, which of course increases their Fuji Rock chances.
Good to note that those two are on the same weekend. I see Soundgarden is strongly rumored for Lollapalooza. Are they really not big enough in Japan to play Fuji? And are you hearing rumors of RATM playing?

I can see Soundgarden playing Fuji, just not as one of the main headliners.

As for RATM, they've worked a lot with Smash in the past (including two Fuji Rock appearances), are scheduled to play some European festivals, and were originally supposed to headline Fuji in 2008 before backing out. When things like this add up, it's inevitable that rumors will start, but it's not like there's any reliable source for this - it's all just conjecture at this point. You know how people will latch on to these things and just run with it though.

Hmm, I can't imagine Soundgarden taking (or deserving) anything less than headliner status. So if it just comes down to local tastes, maybe they won't be there.

Anyone know if Tool is touring/ releasing an album? I heard a rumor but can't find anything that totally verifies it....

Hey. Not long now! The Strokes, Ian Brown, The XX and Yeasayer are all confirmed!
Couple of interesting rumors on Mixi... my favorite of all being... Blur! Think it's possible?? Gorillaz one night, Blur the next??! Amazing!

Can't read Mixi, can't find confirmation on the xx and Yeasayer sites....

Where did you read/ hear these bands are confirmed?

I'm not too surprised with the other three, but Ian Brown (who also played in 2008) came totally out of the blue for me. Where did you get this info btw? Also, aren't the postings at mixi more of a wish list than rumors? Anyway, I assume you'll be going to the festival, so welcome aboard.

Sum41 has officially been confirmed for Summer Sonic! They should be releasing their "hints" any day now.

Also, I may have to retract my previous claim that Muse might be likelier for Summer Sonic. When they played Korea, they apparently said that they'll be back in the summer which probably means that they'll play Jisan Valley (a Korean festival held on the same weekend as Fuji), which probably means that they'll also play Fuji.

My source? An anonymous poster on some message board. So yes, this should be taken with a handful of salt.

Gwello... I wouldn't expect to see it advertised on the bands' website till Smash have announced it...right?

I was told by some people I know at Smash...so i reckon it's reliable, unless they're proper bluffing me!! I'm trying to find out more! Supposed to be a secret but I couldn't keep it to myself!!!

Yeah some of the stuff on mixi is more of a wish list... got a bit excited about Blur though!

Who else do you all think?

Bluestapler...yeah I'll be there for my 3rd time! Can't wait!!

BTW Has YMO ever played a Japanese festival before? I know they kind of reunited for Sonar a while back.

Screamadelica would be worth flying to Fuji for alone. Even given PS repeated attendance.

Sometimes the bands screw up and post such news on their sites when they're not supposed to. That happened once or twice last year. Anyway, just wondering the source.

I think Gorillaz is a real possibility for Fuji. If that's the case, Blur might also make sense -- who knows.

I'm feeling a slight urge to send an email to Smash with a link to this thread. Just kidding, of course! No sense in jeopardizing our chances of receiving further leaks from you. I missed Ian Brown in 2008 so I guess it'll be good that I'll have another chance to see him, but man, first Primal Scream and now him? With all the love that Fuji Rock has shown to him and Mani (and John Squire too - he's played the festival before), if Ian Brown ever changes his mind about the possibility of a Stone Roses reunion, they better fucking play Fuji.

Blur would be great of course, but are they even doing any shows this year? Gorillaz is definitely a possibility, I agree.

They've been organizing their own festival, World Happiness, over the past two years (though they played under the HASYMO name in 2008). I don't think they've done Fuji or Summer Sonic. They haven't announced anything about doing World Happiness this year yet, but I imagine they'll be ruled out for Fuji if they do. Of course, in a solo capacity, Yukihiro Takahashi played Fuji last year, and I believe Hosono did too a few years back (though his solo music sounds nothing like YMO). Not sure about Sakamoto.

Yeah, I was just on that page. Looks like this thread is becoming the global center for Fuji wishes and rumors! Thanks for that.

A lot of those are definitely more wish than rumor though. Unless it's going to be one of the biggest banner years for Fuji ever, there are way too many big acts on that list....

yeah, that list def looks like more of a wish list. Though to be fair Fuji Rock hasn't had a stacked line up since 2003. Maybe 2005 depending on your taste. So it could be time.

Yeah, there's no way Fuji would have a lineup that stacked, although I'm sure that ModernFuss is well aware of that. And the list is missing the two acts who actually are confirmed for Fuj this year - Fountains of Wayne and the Higher.

BTW, Modernfuss, did you see the fujirockers.org message board? Someone apparently posted a "leaked lineup" and then it was deleted ten minutes later. I didn't get to see the post, but people have gone slightly apeshit. I'm not really convinced that it's not a hoax, but if it isn't, maybe the headliners would look like this?

    Friday: Arctic Monkeys
    Saturday: The Strokes
    Sunday: Muse

...thus ensuring that this will be yet another edition of Fuji where I won't be seeing a single Green Stage headliner.

    あと関係ないけど潰スレでここが話題になっててビビりました。

Ack, nevermind, someone reposted it. Keep in mind that there is nothing - absolutely nothing - that ensures that this is genuine:

ALVIN YOUNGBLOOD HART / ARCTIC MONKEYS / THE AVETT BROTHERS / BLOODTHIRSTY BUTCHERS
/ BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE / CARIBOU / THE CRIBS / DARREN EMERSON / DIRTY PROJECTORS / FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE
/ FREEBASS / THE HIGHER / IDJUT BOYS / JAGA JAZZIST / LES CLAYPOOL / MUSE
/ OVERGROUND ACOUSTIC UNDERGROUND / PETER BJORN AND JOHN
    / PE'Z / PRIMAL SCREAM
    / REGINA SPEKTOR / THE STILLS / STRAIGHTENER / TUCK & PATTI / THESE MONSTERS / VARIOUS
/ YOKO ONO PLASTIC ONO BAND / ????

The last one in questions marks is apparently supposed to be Akiko Yano (who would be a win IMO) - the kanji got messed up. Anyway, the first batch will be announced on March 1.

And also, on a personal note, I scored the early bird tickets. Hell yes.

that leaked line up is quite doable in my book. Still, it would take an amazing line up to get me out there again. I do want to plan a trip out of the country soon.

"Doable" is how I'd describe it too. It doesn't make me go "oh wow, that's an amazing lineup" but then again it's definitely not the total disaster that I was kind of fearing.

Jaga Jazzist should be great - I missed them when they came to Japan last year, and Caribou, Broken Social Scene, and Akiko Yano are all wins in my book. And I'm definitely intrigued by Freebass. Hell, even Primal Scream doesn't look too egregious when it's snuck into the lineup like that.

is this lineup for real though? We'll see.

I'm beginning to think that lineup is a hoax. While there's a good chance that the Dirty Projectors will be at Fuji this year, they're scheduled to play here in mid-March, so it's unlikely that they'll be announced for Fuji until after that. Good fake lineup though (if it is indeed that).

  25. #115

Default Re: Fuji Rock Festival 2010

That lineup has been thoroughly debunked now. Caribou will be in the UK during that weekend. Bummer. Would've liked to see them.

    http://www.fielddayfestivals.com/

So yes, apologies for passing on false information. I doubt that this will be the last fake lineup we'll be seeing though. The Interwebs is going to be abuzz with rumors and hoaxes in the coming days.

And I guess that rules out all the bands that are playing Field Day. No one really major on that lineup so far (except maybe Phoenix?), but there goes my prediction that Hypnotic Brass Ensemble will be at Fuji.

Maybe someone just made a mistake with Caribou? Or maybe Caribou switched at the last minute?

I'm hoping that's not the case since I'm underwhelmed with that lineup (leaving out the Japanese acts, which I don't know well).

That "leaked" lineup leaves out The xx and Yeasayer too. I'm really hoping The xx rumors are true.

And finally, will the first lineup announcement happen in early or late March? I can never remember. You said Mar 1 so I'm inclined to believe you.

  29. #119

Default Re: Fuji Rock Festival 2010

The xx are due to tour Japan in May according to their myspage page. I can't find any info about this on Smash's website yet, but from what modernfuss has said, I guess these shows are going to be promoted by them. So they probably won't be announced for Fuji until late May or June.

I'm going to assume that the entire "leaked lineup" is fake (though there will probably be some overlaps with the real lineup anyway). It was actually a good fake too. But that Caribou blunder is a big no-no, and putting Dirty Projectors on there when they're still slated to play a Japanese show was pretty careless. Yes, we're critiquing fake lineups now.

As for Arctic Monkeys, I would hope that they won't be a headliner, but they did headline Summer Sonic in 2007...

And yeah, the first bands are usually announced in early March.
