Anidea by Guido is pretty much not-too-excessively-wobbly dubstep mixed with modern r&b, although it's kind of all over the place stylistically. A lot of it is pretty cheesy. Some of it is kind of good. "Mad Sax" uses a sample of a cheesy 80s sax for its melody. "Way U Make Me Feel" features Yolanda from Massive Attack. "Beautiful Complication" sounds like your typical auto-tuned radio r&b vocal workout with more wobble. "Tantalized" doesn't sound a lot like the rest of the album and is probably my favorite thing on here. This probably isn't something I'm going to listen to very often, but some of you might like it.

I think... probably Cloak and Cipher actually. Their older stuff has much twangier hooks and all, but it's kind of a collection of bits and pieces that were great individual songs, but don't really form an album together. This is just a great album.

Alternatively, Fun & Laughter is a four track EP of four awesome tracks.

Agreed. It's not incredible or mindblowing, but it's a ton of fun and is probably awesome sounding live.

Menomena's Mines is decent. It doesn't really achieve anything that Friend and Foe didn't, but I find the music to be rather unique and interesting, and I look forward to listening to the new one more in the future.

That being said, nothing really floors me about this band.

On the to do list: get better ears.

But seriously. I love the little things they do with a melody and the subtle ways that they fight against a traditional sounding pop song while still producing pop music. They're a fantastic band in my mind and I hope you guys eventually get floored by them, because they've written some incredible music.

I like some of the nuances they manage to achieve... But all in all they combine together to make something that I find fairly unremarkable. It's really strange. I should love the album... But it just kind of... Is. I dunno. I want it to hit me harder, but it never quite comes together.

I honestly can't quite hear it. I know you've heard the subtleties because of how you listen, but it's such a cool, nuanced album in my mind. They do things within the songs that are a logical extension of the past two albums in terms of track development while heading towards a more traditionally accessible point. Maybe I'm a blind sucker for their stuff, but I think I like this one better than Friend and Foe because of the increased intimacy.

This is kind of a fancy and roundabout version of my sentiments. So apparently getting better ears should be on your to-do list as well, haha.

On the topic of 2010 albums, what d'y'all think of The-Dream's new one? It's full of suave synth bangers. The first song alone solidifies the best of 2010 R&B for me, and then he kicks it all over the place. I haven't heard a good, slick, focused album like this since 808s and Heartbreaks.

Love love love. Immensely better than 808s.... Which fared well for a couple half-assed listens, but quickly dropped off into oblivion.

How To Dress Well's LP will be the best 2010 R&B for sure though... If not the best album period.

ooooo. I'm taking that on then. I finally have good internet, but this -Dream album has been slaying me for the past few weeks, and especially in the past few days. The bass is so full without being the typical club sound. The guy gets making an R&B record in the way very few have figured out.

Edit: recommendations for approaching How to Dress Well please. He's got tons of stuff to hear, I'd love to know the names of the 2-3 best.

    Will U Sleep
    Friday Morning Hymnal

total antithesis to The-Dream though. his lp (remastered cuts from all the EPs I believe) comes out next month. i imagine it'll leak in the near future.

I'm fairly certain HTDW's Decisions is my favorite song of the year. It's absolutely brilliant. Was thrilled to see Pitchfork give it a shout out today.

How to Dress Well is R&B? Hmm. Haven't checked out his stuff yet, I've been waiting for the full length LP to drop.

I'm gonna listen to that tonight. I'm in a total R&B and noise/weird and different mindset right now. Anything forward is going to be incredible.

Edit: I've always wondered what lo-fi, top-level R-B sounds like. I can't wait to hear How To Dress Well on a proper release, because his stuff sounds incredible. Decisions is a glacially beautiful masterpiece of vocals, synths and drums. This stuff is not to passed up.

Thread made me download every scrap of How to Dress Well I could find. It's definitely more abstract, but it has that R&B feel. Basically, it's the music I've been hunting for all summer. This stuff is beautifully crafted.

I listened to the Menomena for the first time today as well. I liked it a whole lot on the first listen, which usually doesn't happen. Good omen.

I tried to listen to The-Dream and I just don't get it. I just kind of hate the basic sonic building blocks of modern R&B and rap I think. The auto-tune and the cheap skittering drum beats that are on EVERY SINGLE SONG (not on this album specifically, just in general) drive me crazy. I cannot think of a single R&B song with auto-tune I like. I hate to dismiss an entire genre of music but goddamn, the way it's all produced just seems so gimmicky and stretched thin to me. Am I missing something?

Also, after a few listens, I agree with whatever it was Bryan said about the new Fall album however many months ago that was. As good as anything they've done.

i find this far superior to the Big Boi release (as far as recent 2010 hip hop goes).

Just go to his blog and download all the EP's. They are free there. I assume that is what you did, but if you missed something, that would be the place to get it.
