Default A remarkable solution to the banking crisis.

I got my first pay-cheque (or check, in America) from my Graduate Assistant job here in San Diego, last week. A few days ago I went to my bank (Citibank) and deposited the cheque into my account. It was the first time I had ever tried to deposit a cheque in America. Yesterday, I got this letter:

So, just to clarify: I deposited $1026.33, and the bank is not prepared to allow me to access ANY of that money, but 90 years from now, on January 1st 2099 - by which time I will almost certainly be dead - they will give me $826.00 of it. No mention of the other $200.33 at all. Excellent money-saving tactics there, Citibank.

I see an angry visit to the bank in my near future.

    FIGHT IT!

I like the idea about threats of lawyers/lawsuits. and when banks fuck up hard (like this) they sometimes will even reward you with a bit more money...

    Ahahaha

The good news, of course, is that this is obviously a clerical error and not a fundamental policy issue. It's pretty standard for banks to hold checks for a processing time in new accounts to prevent fraud (watch that horrible Leonardo Dicaprio film about check depositing scams if you need further explanation). But usually that hold time is no longer than 5-10 days.

So a century or so isn't standard practice then?

Stef's wait may be longer if his name was flagged for being a suspicious Brit.

I'm sure they do happen, and they're just not reported. If Citibank accidentally gave you an extra $200, would you really call and complain?
