    Default Question about DJ rates?

So I'm throwing a warehouse party for NYE and trying to get a relatively well known local DJ to spin. He does seem to play nationally but looks like it's mostly mid-west with some east/west coast dates. Not as popular as some one like Freeland but he's on a decent label. He is interested.

My question is, what would a typical rate for someone like this be for one night headline set? I don't want to lowball the guy but I don't want to get ripped off either.

The bigger question is how are you going to afford the insurance?

If it's gonna be an underground thing and you aren't getting insurance then how are you gonna afford the DJ...

In all honesty though i'm curious to see how much this would be as well...

    One Miiiilllllion Dollars.

There's no answer to your question without knowing who he is, and if we did know it may still be impossible to get the "right" number. There could be lots of factors like where else he's playing locally near NYE, how far he has to come, etc.
    Who is he?

EDIT: btw the notariety vs. fee curve is extremely steep at the expensive end. It's not until a DJ explodes that they start asking for gobs of money (generally after they get an agent). You'd be suprised how cheap a lot of great DJs can be had for. Lowball him. ya never know. He's just a fucking DJ.

i do photography for a guy in la that puts on some pretty big events (600-1000 heads) and i know he usually pays $150-$200 for openers, headliners vary but ive heard anything from $500-$1000

i specifically remember him saying he paid $600 for disco villains and i think $900 for designer drugs. those are both small but fairly popular electro acts that play nationally/internationally so maybe that can give you some reference...

Party will have 300-400 people. we are charging $75 a head. offering the DJ for every person that he personally gets in the door he will get a cut of the $75. Was thinking $500 bucks flat plus the cut of the people he brings in. I'm really not sure that's why I'm asking.

Don't want to give the name right now just in case but he's pretty good.

no. talk to me. seriously, tell me all the things that I need to do this thing.

basically I'm just in charge of getting the DJ's and setting things up with them. Actually I have nothing to lose from this since I am not putting up front any of the money. My buddy is covering costs and getting a bigger percentage of the profit. I just don't want to rip off the DJ or get ripped myself..

    The $500 is probably enough.
If I were him I wouldn't agree to any cut scheme. That shit never works. Just offer him a flat rate and be done with it. Why would people pay $75 to come to this party if they didn't know him?

    Is this party in LA?

Chicago. It's $75 bucks all you can drink on NYE in Chicago.

I think this is a mid-west thing but bars here do deals all the time where they charge you a flat rate of lets say $30 bucks and you just drink for 3 hours without having to pay the bartender. just tip. NYE here is easily $75 -$150

that sounds awesome. I'd pay $75 for a drink-all-you-want pass

EDIT: i wouldn't offer him a cut unless he asks for it. People drink like fishes situations like this, so you might end up needing to cover a lot of alcohol costs

Since you were willing to give 100% of the admissions that he brings in, just offer him $500 and guest list spots.

yeah offer him $500 (if you really like this guy), and if he balks at it just start say you've encountered a bunch of unexpected expenses and the DJ budget is the next thing to get cut anyway if they don't lock something down. It's a NYE party, not a DJ [blank] show. If it's all you can drink then I'll bet even Girl Talk could somehow manage to entertain those people.

$500 seems to be the magic number...

if he rejects it then ask him to name a price. don't just shoot in the dark until you get to a number he likes because he may just try to play you if he senses you're not very familiar with this kind of stuff.

Girl Talk entertaining people still seems dubious. Nerd.

Good call. He'd probably assume guest list anyway, but make this seem like you're extending yourself.

All the girls he wants for free. Dude's 25% off.

Just offered him $500 plus cut. Like, $5 bucks a person. My thought is if he promotes this thing not only can he make some additional money but so can we. probably give him a few guest passes. 20 people is $100 extra bucks for him. Plus, Chicago is his home town. No not Felix.
