so how does primavera work?
is it like coachella where everyone shows up to a specific location and there are various stages? or is it more like SXSW/CMJ where it is in Barcelona but you go around the city to various venues/stages?

The majority of the shows are at one venue, the Parc Del Forum, with various stages set up a la Coachella. It's open air with hard concrete everywhere. No grass. There is an indoor seated venue right there too where they have select shows during the fest (Portishead played indoors and outdoors at the '08 Primavera). As sonofhal mentioned, there are showcase shows around the city in the days prior to the fest proper. I don't know any of those venues.

Guys, I cannot recommend Barcelona and this festival enough. They are both truly wonderful.

How is the camping?

There is no camping. Stay at a hotel or a hostel or rent a flat for the week with some mates depending on your budget.

I've checked out shows at the tiny Sidecar and at Sala Apolo in the past. Both are fairly decent venues. There are some free shows in the Parc Miro early on Sat and Sun, for those who get up early (Bowerbirds, Plants & Animals and Kimya Dawson did sets in the parc this year).

I rented a room in a shared flat off La Rambla. It was kinda meh but it wasn't what I had originally booked. Hostelworld switched me at the last minute. :/

Pretty much. They put out a few albums that gave them a large indie following, left for a number of years and are returning to do nostalgia tours. Sounds about right.
