that's actually a good thing to add to the post WWII issues as well. we have always flip-flopped on our immigration policies as a country (for example, we were happy to have the chinese here to build our railroads, but then tried to push them out in the early 1900s). but after WWII, that's when our modern immigration issues with mexico really started. with the men returning from war and women staying in the workforce, we started to have less of a need for our migrant friends from the south.

I think the opposite is true. Following WWII the country prospered, usually anyone employable could get a job, and there was still lots of room for Mexicans to come frame houses and mow lawns. The immigration backlash started when there got to be so many hispanics here that the Fearful Trembling White Underbelly saw an America they didn't recognize.

hmm...but those kids were the exception rather then the rule...teenagers have a much higher pregnancy rate then in Denmark...even the UK is higher...

Denmark is contentedly capitalist, economically comfortable and one of the most socially progressive nations in the world.

I don't think that's what you were saying there, Algunz, I'd just like to head off any suggestions that might come later on from other corners. I'd be quite happy to carry a few lazy assholes if it meant I got to live somewhere that functions as well as Denmark.
Win. You said it before I could.

    the systems...not the countries themselves....

we have lots of states that have similar or smaller populations and most of them are just a mess....

Denmark for one has the most flexible labor market in the world...bar none...and because of that it has one of the LOWEST unemployment rates on the planet...3% unemployment even with the recession..the only draw back are the taxes with the tax ceiling being 59%

immediately following WWII many mexican workers were sent home due to the servicemen coming home. they had already been outsted around the great depression anyways and were only allowed back for a short time due to the war. perhaps in the 1950s you're right in that there was still some desire for mexican workers and we had laws & programs in place that reflect that, but the 60s put an end to that.

we also started to phase out our love of the workers to the south in the late 1950s & early 1960s, not only due to our own growing workforce, but also due to technological advancements in agrictulture and the further industrialization of the workforce.

I give them credit for championing my post as the end-all statement on such a complex issue. You always know a thread is on the decline when half of the page is pictures of people with downs syndrome.
