I've always found The Pixies to be an uninteresting band. Their songs feel flat and the lyrics have always seemed silly... Mostly the band seems to just try to hard without really offering anything terribly interesting musically...

Convince me I'm wrong? In 3 songs?

They have a huge catalogue, which are all awesome, but something about these songs always hit me hard. All three are on "Tromp le Monde".

Supre did not remotely nail it. All great songs, but not the songs I would use to convince someone why Radiohead is awesome. The Gloaming and Sit Down, Stand Up are very much songs that you kinda have to be already down with the Radiohead style to enjoy. Keep Idioteque and replace the rest with these, just because we might as well leave out obvious ones like Planet Telex and any singles.

I asked the person what kind of style they wanted to hear. They responded and I posted the videos that represented that best imo. I had Climbing up The Walls as one for sure since it is my favorite off OK Computer, but it wasnt appropriate at the time. YAWA wouldve been a piano song also, that with Pyramid Song and Fog.

Either/or really. I think "Heroin" is one of the worst songs ever, as a starting point. I enjoy solo Lou Reed, though.

I think I would then point you towards the non-Cale records.

I like Unemployable and Once, but those and Parachutes (ugh) are the three you would choose? This thread didn't have many good choices for PJ, but they are better than that. The PJ thread had some better suggestions.

I'm targeting Tom here. And Parachutes is a perfectly good track. I figured Tom has undoubtedly heard a wide enough array of what PJ used to sound like back in the grunge era days, and really a lot of those songs all sound the same and are probably what turned him off. So I took Parachutes and Unemployable because they don't sound too much like PJ. Then Once because it's one of their classic era that you don't hear that much.

Part of my rule in going about this is that singles shouldn't really be bothered with. If you're trying to convince someone to feel differently about a band you can assume they've heard some of the singles and not liked them.

I agree on the singles. But Tom also said he hates Ten, so that should rule out Once. Most PJ fans will stay away from Avocado as it is generally considered their weakest. Unemployable is probably my favorite on the album, but Parachutes is so bland. Their strongest work is in the Vs - Yield eras. I'd have included at least something from there.

And I think we're all wasting a lot of time and effort with Tom and the Pearl Jam thing. PJ's my favorite band, largely because I grew up with them, they were the first cd's I bought, first bootlegs I heard, etc. If Ten came out today I probably wouldn't care for it that much.

And Tom is I'm guessing 15 or so years older than I am...he loves the Clash and was around for a lot of the late-70s rock so of course early 90s quasi-alternative rock isn't gonna appeal to him. We'll experience the same thing with new and upcoming bands in the coming years. That's really all there is to it.

You can hate Ten all you want, hell I do for the most part, but Once is a great and lesser heard track. I actually really enjoy Parachutes. I think it shows a softer side of them that isn't all annoyingly melodramatic.

Actually no, I'd rather not. Just because you're a fan of the band doesn't mean that you're good at picking songs to use to convince other people. Tom loves my mixes, I have my finger on his pulse.

Though with the Black Keys I suspect you are correct because it is tough to be wrong about them. The exceptions I can think of is if you have dimissed them based on Attack & Release - in which case I would point you to earlier songs such as "10 A.M. Automatic" and "Set You Free" and "The Lengths - or if you have dismissed them as stagnant without having heard Attack & Release - in which case I would point you to various songs on that album but I neither have it in front of me nor know it well enough to suggest specific songs.

that is the order I listened to them. "Hard to Imagine" did nothing for me. It's more of that plodding sludgy stuff that I associate with PJ and it doesn't work for me. And "In My Tree" is more of that Vedder-groaning-like-a-sick-Holstein stuff that I don't like either.

But to my surprise it got a lot better with the last two. There's a compactness and concision to those songs that I'd not heard from PJ before. So now at least I can see why people might like them.
