Default Kid Koala Presents: The Slew

A couple of years back Eric San (aka Kid Koala) and Dylan J. Frombach (aka Dynomite D) were approached to soundtrack a new documentary feature film that was in production. Koala was already well known for his uncanny turntable manipulation, whilst Dylan had remixed Money Mark and collaborated with the Beastie Boys, amongst others. The duo worked for a long time on the psych rock-influenced score, only for the filming to collapse and any release to be canned. Although the film may never see the light of day, its music is about to be brought to life on stage.

Recently Koala & Dylan met the former rhythm section of Grammy Award-winning Australian rock band Wolfmother and began telling them all about the film and its lost music. Chris Ross and Myles Heskett loved the clips and urged that the material had to be heard; subsequently Kid Koala and the guys decided to put a show on the road.

After intensive rehearsals the show is now ready to go. Featuring drums, bass/keys and the DJs working across a truly excessive six turntables, the set is seventy minutes of raw guitar cuts and heavy beats. We can guarantee that you will never have heard anything quite like this and also that you are unlikely to again. It’s a one-off tour, so when it stops in your town you’ll either be there or will have missed it forever.

Anyone who has seen previous Kid Koala events will not be disappointed - from Kid Koala's incendiary solo turntable spectaculars to the Nufonia book launch, Deltron 3030 live to the Short Attention Span Theater.

Brash, loud and defiantly turned up to eleven. The Slew Tour is coming to your town. Don't miss it.

    What do you think now?

Kid Koala is fun. He should make a documentary to go with his score.

Costa Mesa get's a DJ set? Weak. Nonetheless I'm still going to go. Now only to convince Andrew.

edit: nevermind. This is the same night as Nocturnal.

So, I really enjoyed last night's show. Here's what I wrote in another thread:

Quote Originally Posted by fikus222 View Post
After checking everybody out at SAM, we headed over to the Kid Koala Slew Tour show at the Nectar Lounge. We got there for the opening act, whose name escapes me right now, but they consisted of a turntablist and a guy on keys/vocals/guitar. They were very cool and the vocalist looked a lot like Mos Def. The second act was Adira Amram, whose on stage performance was a complete and utter surprise. Think Peaches mixed in with some Lords of Acid and then sprinkled with some Santogold, it was a hilariously good time. Next came the Slew, it was Kid Koala on 3 tables, with another cat on 3 tables and then the ex-rhythm section from Wolfmother (a bass guitarist/keyboardist and also a drummer). They put on a very good show and played every song from their album. we especially enjoyed the slower songs, as they were more melodic and the 'band' tended to jam/build them up nicely. Good times were had.

One side note, apparently yesterday afternoon US CBP Officers detained the tour bus at the Washington/Canadian border for several hours. I guess CBP wasn't going to allow Kid Koala into the country for some reason or another and it took them forever to get his entry approved. Adira made some funny jokes about it.
Some more tidbits; Kid Koala said that the Slew album was four years in the making and that the idea behind it came about while hanging with some guys in Federal Way (WA) (both of whom were at the show last night), also the show was over by 12:30 so you might want to get to the venue a little bit early(ish), especially since the opening acts are definitely worth it.

her performance really wouldn't translate well to audio recordings, i would have avoided her too if i had listened to her stuff beforehand. she was hilarious and very entertaining, we likened it to a mix between peaches, lords of acid and santogold.

well, i like all three of those artists you compared her to. dunno....still feel like i would have found her act too "kitschy". peaches and LOA are pretty special, hard-to-replicate talents...many have tried and failed.

but, let's give focus back to the thread.....KK and The Slew were truly amazing. i feel lucky to have caught this collaboration. if they are coming to your town, don't miss this!

Did anybody catch the name of the opening act? It was the two guys, one on turntables the other on the keyboard, guitar and vocals.

Hahaha you dont know what you missed. I was completely shocked walking into the Key Club last night. At first I thought wtf, ignored her and got a drink. My friend was on her way down to the floor and I was hesitant to walk down with her. I did anyway and didn't stop laughing. Great opening act to The Slew!

The Slew was really cool to watch, my void of this type of performance was definitely filled. The bass and drum sometimes were a little much but the slower songs were a lot more enjoyable. I think the set list was just the album played in order. You can tell that they are still evolving this sound, im sure there will be greatness to come.

    Key Points:

-Kid Koala is a genius mad man on the tables
-LA crowd doesnt know how to groove
    -Adira is a superstar

video to come in a couple days...

I liked the way koala was talking to the crowd by mixing the talking parts of other bands' live records.
