I started surfing this year, and I really like it.
My friend and I am thinking to go to surf in winter holiday.

Where is good place to surf? We are thinking to go to Bali.

Bali's surf is fun... But if you are comfortable going off the beaten path, there are lots of better surf spots all around Indonesia. Bali itself is pretty overrun with tourist traps and garbage. You'll end up spending a lot more money there than somewhere else.

some would argue don't ever bother... you can get plenty of equivalent surf nearby. Lombok, for one, is a great spot... and there are beaches appropriate for various skillsets.

this isn't really an issue. there are a variety of beaches with different difficulty levels all over the island.

Fumfum, if you come to Hawaii I will go surfing with you. I am learning with a couple of my girl friends, but none of us are very good (yet).

I will go in Christmas season. Of course, I am not good enough, but surfing in winter is cold here. I do surf in every weekend now, so hopefully, I will be better.

We are thinking to join surf camp or taking lessons.

oahu and kauai have pretty cool spots. i did some surfing and kiteboarding last month on the south/west shores and loved it. i think the peak time is december-january. i'm not experienced enough to ride the big waves on the north shore during winter though.

I don't think I have ever discussed surfing on this board except maybe once with Ron. Lots of ski & snowboard discussion though. /random observations

Also, 10 years of surfing, I have never left southern california to do so. I am awefully boring. It doesn't help that I detest Hawaiian vacations though.

Surfing! I <3 to surf also. I am very jealous that you get to surf Bali. I hear it is an amazing spot. My friends tell me that the place to go is Kuta, there are many surfing beaches there and range from beginner to advanced.

If you ever want to surf Nicaragua let me know my friend Chris runs a surfing camp down there and he can get you a very good deal. I just went to Barbados in the spring and there are many beautiful spots to surf there. They also have schools with room and board.

If you ever come to the USA again other than coachella and during the winter season stop by Colorado and we will go snowboarding. It shares similar properties to surfing and is easier to pick up if you already know how to surf.

For the first time, I went surfing last month at carlsbad beach and it was great. I really want to pursue it as a hobby and go every weekend. Any local beach reccomendations?

Also,ten years ago when I surfed I didn't have the liberty of driving my own car(16yrs. old) or travel abroad on my own so I stayed local-Huntington/Seal Beach...not much for swells sure,but there was an occasional 6 footer to cut my teeth.

I just started surfing long board, but I want to try short board someday, when I get better. I have a question for people who do surf. Do you surf long board or short board?

California has nice spots to surf. I went to surf last weekends, the waves were wild because of typhoon season.

Long board is a great way to learn to ride and ride big waves. If you want to get into the turning and cutbacks go shortboard. I go shortboard only because I learned snowboarding first. Shortboard is more freestyle. In the USA I used to hit up North Carolina during hurricane season on a long board because the waves were slower and and less of a break.

California has very crowded and angry people at thier surfing spots.

You can get to Bali for cheap from Japan fumfum. I have a friend from up here in Hokkaido going later this month!
