You guys should all really check out JayLouMurph by Dinosaur Jr. It captured them right before their initial collapse, and it's the sound of a great band tugging in different ways and fraying at the seams. They can completely dominate the songs they're playing live because there's so much tension, and you really get the feel for how impressive they were at this time. They recently released a DVD, Live in the Middle East, which is arguably a better live representation of them (they're better now than they were in the 80s, if you'll buy it), but the JayLouMurph album is the only live record they've actually released. Either way, check out the wicked versions of Freak Scene. That song was made for live performance, and Jay's guitar solo really turns it on in either setting.

One of the only live albums I know that is significantly better than the studio recordings from which the songs in the set came.

The Who - Live at Leeds
The whole album just explodes, but for me the highlight is "A Quick One While He's Away," vastly superior to its studio incarnation.


James Brown - Live at the Apollo
This album is out there as a bootleg that covers the entire show, but even this original condensed version is electric, with Brown and his band as one from start to finish. The cover boasts 'vivid sound' - Fuck yeah, it's vivid.


James Brown - Love Power Peace
James Brown with the JB's, a band that included Bootsy Collins on bass guitar. The sounds are deceptively loose, though ultimately funky.


Verve - Voyager 1
Official bootleg recorded during the band's early stargazing period. Tracks are divided by clips from films or lectures by Timothy Leary, evoking classic psychedelia.

The Springsteen bootleg "Live in the Promised Land - Winterland 1978" is still my favorite live album ever. It is better than any of his "official" live albums (I think there are 5, now, jeezus) and catches the E Street Band in top form. There is a ferociousness to many of the songs that people today don't see with him. Sound quality is not bad (iffy at the beginning but then it gets pretty good a couple songs in) - this show was apparently broadcast on the radio. If you're at all curious why sane people with otherwise good taste get excited about Springsteen, this album might answer the question for you.

The Clash "From Here to Eternity" is an interesting live album in that it picks from different eras, so it's more like a live compilation -- you do not get the feeling that you're listening to an actual show, which is a drawback to some. However, all the performances are stellar and in particular "Complete Control", "Guns of Brixton", and "Straight to Hell" are just fucking amazing -- better than the studio versions in my opinion. (This is saying a lot, for me, since "Complete Control" has always been my favorite Clash song). The part where Joe goes "I don't trust you -- why should you trust me? HUH?" sends shivers down my spine.

The Clash have another live album "Live at Shea Stadium", which is one concert, but I've not heard it yet. Fan fail.

Neil young makes his guitar sound like its crying during certain times and its pure fucking brilliance... plus there is a fantastic version of blowin in the wind that is damn near perfect...

rockin in the free world, cinnamon girl, fucking up, all rock hard and the songs that last 10 plus minutes dont feel like they are drawn out or extended jams.. they sound great and the whole album is just amazing!

Recorded in Dublin in front of a naturally receptive crowd, the album captures their intensity far better than their studio work. This album bookmarks the end of a long chapter of their more straight forward work as their next album seemed to turn down the amps quite a bit and showed the beginning of the path that led to 'Once'. Highlights for me are the teased out 'Santa Maria', 'Fitzcarraldo' and the very best version of 'Perfect Opening Line' I have personally heard (and I've seen them 11 or 12 times)

Rory Gallagher - Irish Tour '74

Criminally unknown by the wider public and with a life cut short (died at 47), Rory left a canon of work behind him with several live albums documenting his work. ......... '74 is probably the best regarded of the lot and was recorded over a few different shows. One of the first impressions I got when I first heard this album was that the instruments were trying to come out of the speakers and batter you; they are that alive. The shortest track here is still 5+ minutes long with most well over 7 minutes. There isn't one second of filler. The highlight for me is the incendiary Tattoo'd Lady.

There is a dvd also labeled Irish Tour '74 which is more of a documentary than a straight concert tourfilm; it's pretty decent also even if the cuts are sometimes different than the album.
