That Thurston noise set we got at ATP NY was awesome. But yeah, I would expect that to be loud.

Edit: Let's start some discussion on the new page. Listened to Ben Vida esstends - esstends - esstends last night because I saw Jared mention it somewhere. Such a crazy listening experience I don't know how to describe it. Just started it again right now and I still can't. Disorienting? Really fucking good though.

Arc Lab just signed up for soundcloud. Here's an unreleased album he just posted:

Not technically "noise" but this seems like a good thread to post it in anyway.

So, what ambient & drone have you guys liked so far this year? The ones I've really liked have been:

Pjusk - Tele (not quite as good as Sval, but still good and the experimentation on this one is interesting)
T.S.R. - GTCHI97 (this is a collab between Carbon Based Lifeforms and someone else I cannot remember. It's a little more noise/beat-y than the ambient that comes directly from Carbon Based Lifeforms. I just listened to it today and it is good)
ASC And Sam KDC - Decayed Society (ASC is one of my favorite DJs right now. He usually does DnB/Autonomic kind of stuff, but this is pure ambient and fucking glorious. Might be one of my favorite albums of the year)

I listened to the new Bvdub and didn't like it (lacked creativity...too repetitive) and the Kutin release also didn't do much for me either. I just the other day listened to the new Atrium Carceri and need to give that another listen before I make any determinations about it. I also need to give those two new Groupers another listen. They are just so fucking dense! Oh, and I'm not counting the new Julia Holter as ambient...it's more pop to me ears. Anyway...what else should I be listening to?

EDIT: forgot one...Listening Mirror - Resting in Aspic (reminds me a lot of Eno's straight-up ambient with some piano thrown in here and there that smacks of A Winged Victory for the Sullen. Very peaceful and perfect to fall asleep to)

Really going to be sad if that last gig isn't in LA. But this is super fucking exciting nevertheless.

Definitely. I'm tempted to go to Seattle. Been wanting to check it out, that triple bill is a good excuse.

A nice piece on Motion Sickness of Time Travel and her label, Hooker Vision.

Same author as the recent Container profile. He deserves a more prominent role at RA imo.

the latest Hooker Vision batch is pretty solid (the Grant Evans and Crippling tapes in particular). The label has been really hit and miss for me, but there are some total gems they've put out. Winds Over Silmäterä is pure bliss.

Hey dudes, has this ever been posted in here?

    http://noise-arch.net/

it's huge archive of old tapes. They're all linked as direct mp3s so you can both download or play directly through your browser. pretty awesome.

EDIT: I guess most of this stuff is from the '80s too. The archiver posted this on reddit, my girlfriend just sent it to me.

I haven't heard the entirety of either yet, but what I have heard from Carter Tutti Void's Transverse has been incredible (am just now getting around to it), as well as Sarin Smoke's '07 release Smokescreen (still waiting for the new one to go up on ?).

Andrew Pekler - Cover Versions. An astonishing piece of music. Possibly my favorite thing from this year so far.

I have a new #1 for this year. Pan American - Cloud Room, Glass Room. The most astonishing first listen I've had to something of this sort since the first time I heard Rene Hell's The Terminal Symphony. Listen to this one with some good headphones.

This is something I am really eager to listen to...Arctic Sleep, a band that usually sounds a lot like Isis (and they're really fucking good), just released a drone album.

An unusual departure from Arctic Sleep's regular recordings, this is an album focused on 100% ambient "ascension drone"... each track representing one of four total realms.
You can listen to it and pay what you want (including free) on their bandcamp.

The only one I'm familiar that's mentioned in that article (not the list though) is the Orcutt/Corsano collab, which is indeed fantastic. I'm still hoping a record of the Orcutt/Corsano/Alan Bishop (Alvarius B) live set from last year will surface, last I checked I heard maybe early next year.

the Kolovos record in particular is completely essential. the pressing and packaging are way too good for its price point as well. totally recommend picking it up.

Listened to as much as that as I could, but it's tough for me to stomach that kind of thing for too long. I guess it's something I really have to work at to appreciate. Reminds me of Sonny Sharrock kind of.

that is an interesting reference point that I would never have thought of.

the thing about kolovos is... he's been dead set on this thing for like 8-9 years now. the sound hasn't changed. his approach hasn't changed. it has just gotten more and more nuanced and surgical. his commitment is relentless and it definitely requires some serious attention.

in many ways he's a pretty serious counterpoint to Yeh, who, although has displayed a similar kind of commitment, bounces around a variety of approaches and experiments. for Kolovos, there is just this one thing. not sure he'll be able to top this album, but then again, I felt the same way with the last one.

It also reminds me, in passing, to parts of the first Nurse With Wound album, which I alternately love and hate depending on my mood.

Wolf Eyes were spectacular last night. I didn't think I'd ever get a chance to see them, they played for a full hour too which was a nice surprise.
