    Default Soul Coughing Appreciation

What an unbelievable band. I know they could never headline Coachella for pure marketing and money making reasons, but I would shit bricks if they reunited for Coachella.

Some Soul Coughing vids in honor of them.

I approve of this. Certainly not headlining. But a non-conflicting Gobi spot would definitely be awesome.

ah, yes.. one of the few 90's acts i missed back in the day..
"Soundtrack to Mary" and "(Spinning Around in) Circles" would be epic!

this makes me think of the other epic reunion we need... The Eels!

Soul Coughing = WIN!! Yes, would be a great reunion act. All 3 albums are fantastic. The song that got me into them was the Propellerheads remix of....???? damn, can't remember. How about a Propellerheads reunion in the Sahara??

So, Mike Doughty just released an album today.

His Website ... you can download a song for free from the album and check out the rest of the stuff he's been up to. He's also touring in the North-east of the US right now. He's kinda sorta a friend of mine so I also interviewed him about the album.

I will post that later this week. Big ups to other Soul Coughing fans out there.

I don't know if this is posted anywhere else lately, but Mike Doughty has been working on "reimagining" Soul Coughing songs for a new album that released last week. Now, I LOVE Soul Coughing. Pivotal band for me, and I owe so many late nights and beautiful moments to their poetry and sound- Buuuuut, after a couple spins, the album is pretty disappointing.
While I love M. Doughty's voice, it's so deep and authentic and yes, the bass and drums are slightly more playful, the tempo slightly happier... all the differences are just that- very slight- nothing really different or special. They all just seem like outtakes of the original songs. Anyone else have thoughts?
He's coming to Salt Lake, a show I've been waiting to see for years now. But, I already got my ticket for Cut Copy for the same night. I feel like a total sell out.

Well screw going to that show then. I was thinking about going, but I had also thought he was doing Soul Coughing covers on this tour. Reimaginations of old songs are rarely ever good.

I hadn't paid attention to M. Doughty for years, but there's an article over on AVClub.com about his new album, with some of the "reimaginings" of old Soul Coughing songs. I took a listen since it piqued my interest (the article was fairly effusive in its praise), and ... just absolute trash. It's completely horrible.

this makes me sad. He's doing 2 shows in the LA area on this "soul coughing" tour and I wanted to catch at least 1. I followed his solo albums for a while, but they got progressively more boring. I remember really liking the first one, thinking the 2nd was okay, and hating the 3rd. I don't know how many he's up to now...4? 5? Maybe i'll win free tickets or something.

Mike Doughty has been on the record many times disowning the Soul Coughing discography entirely, calling the other band members names & chastising fans when they request SC songs at his shows..

Then he has the nerve to "reimagine" SC songs cuz he needs some cash..

    Fuck this piece of shit.

    seriously.

i hate musicians like this.. fuck him

Bug on your lip- while I think that's sorta harsh, I sorta agree. I've been watching M. Doughty for a few years and his behavior is pretty pathetic. He's stooped to another low- and I'd hate to see him lash out at fans as I've heard him do before.

Better to remember the band for how good it was, not go to a show where it'll feel like a funeral.

oh no, this is now the Soul Coughing Ingratitude thread.

lol. I haven't spoken with him in about 2 1/2 years. yeah, he is so bitter about the past it completely ruined him. He started to be a real bummer to be around after visiting me a few times in Venice. He's as delusional as Billy Corgan. At times he would rant about how SC was ALL him, and then later say how he HATES all the material. He's also another one of those artists that cannot replicate his amazing heights he had during his heavy drug use. He's sober and lost his art and most everyone around him now.

It is best just to take the records as they are. As a genuine fan and general friend of his, it's the only way to keep the material close without getting depressed.

Because, man, Ruby Vroom is utterly astounding start to finish. A true classic.

Weird, I didn't hear about that new album. I'm interested even though it sounds like a bad idea. Here's what wiki says about the album:

A crowd-funded album of Soul Coughing songs "re-imagined". In other words, as he'd initially imagined them in the 90s before his bandmates manipulated them, to his disliking. As expressed in The Book Of Drugs, he feels animosity toward the Soul Coughing versions, so this is a big step
